4-H Regional Winter Workshop 2013

Who: All 4-H members, leaders, parents and families are invited to join Bristol, Norfolk and Plymouth Countys 4-H for our annual 4-H workshop! What: A day of fun-filled, educational, hands-on learning activities. When: Saturday, February 2, 2013 Registration is in the Lobby from 9:30 to 9:50 am Workshops from 10 am to 3 pm Where: Norfolk County Agricultural High School 400 Main Street (Rt. 1A) Walpole, MA Cost: $10.00 per 4-H member or sibling with a maximum of $30.00 per family; No charge for adults. Please make checks payable to: Norfolk County 4-H Advisory Council. Meals: Please bring your own bag lunch for this event. ** There are also a few fast food restaurants in the area, however there is a 45 minute break for lunch. Snow: If there is a severe storm, we will cancel the event; there is no snow date. Money will not be returned but will be used toward the event next year since materials will have already been purchased. In the event of bad weather, call the Norfolk County 4-H Office at 508-668-9793 and listen to the machine for instructions. Remember that everyone must make their own decisions about whether the roads are safe to travel on based on local conditions and their personal feelings!

Registration forms are accepted until January 28, but workshops are made on a firstcome, first-serve basis! Get your forms in early for the best chance to get the workshop of your choice!

Directions to Norfolk County Agricultural High School 400 Main Street (Route 1A) Walpole, MA

FROM THE SOUTH (Rhode Island) 1. 2. 3. 4. Route 95 North Take Exit 9, and follow the signs for Route 1 to Walpole Take a left on Route 27 at the intersection at the first set of lights Follow Route 27 (quite windy and twisty, three sets of lights, a stop sign and another set of lights before you come to Route 1A) 5. Right onto Route 1A (Main Street) in the center of Walpole 6. From Walpole Center (the intersection of Routes 1A and 27), pass through a yellow flashing light and a set of full lights at the Stop & Shop Plaza. 7. After the Stop & Shop Plaza, as you go up the hill, you will see a flashing yellow light on the left. The Agricultural School is the third driveway on the left after the yellow flashing light, right after the white board fence.

As you enter the schools campus, the first building on the right is the Administration Building. Park in either the front lot or the back lot of the Administration Building. Proceed to the Main Conference Room, located on the first floor of the Administration Building for registration.

YOUTH AND ADULT WORKSHOP DESCRIPTIONS
Cooking with Deanna: Have fun making homemade pretzels and fruit smoothies with 4-H volunteer Deanna Van Schagen. All ages are welcome to attend this workshop. Make a Horse Craft: In this fun workshop, you will make a horse-themed craft to take home. Taught by 4-H volunteer Kim Gatto. For all ages. Dog Clicker Training: Learn how to train your dog with the use of a clicker. Bring your own dog and learn how to use this technique. 4-H volunteer Cathy Acampora will teach this workshop which is for all ages. Dogs must be crated or supervised by an adult while participants attend other classes. You Can Teach Your Old Dog New Tricks!: Learn the basics of canine freestyle; some basic moves and the concept of heeling to music, even a few tricks. Taught by 4-H volunteer Cathy Acampora, this workshop will allow participants to bring their own dogs. Dogs must be crated or supervised by an adult while participants attend other classes. Equipment needed: leash, water bowl, and training treats such as tiny pieces of hotdog, chicken, steak or liver. For all ages. Making Movie Memories; Learn the basics of Windows Movie Maker to tell your story. 4-H Educator Kim Pond will cover editing images and video footage along with making a simple storyboard. This is a two-session workshop which we highly encourage our 4-H Teen Ambassadors to attend. For ages 10 and up. GPS: Global Positioning Systems and Geospatial Technology are all around us from our phones and cars to using Google Earth and maps. Gear up for NYSD 2013 by learning about maps and how a GPS works with bonus geocache. Taught by 4-H Educator Kim Pond, this workshop is for ages 8 and up. Terrariums: Learn how to build a decorative terrarium you can take home! Also learn about basic plant science and how to keep your terrarium thriving for months. Please bring a glass bowl or large jar for this workshop. Taught by 4-H volunteers Brenda Easter and Marlene Peters, this workshop is for all ages. Beekeeping and the Environment: This hands-on workshop, taught by 4-H volunteer Susan Whalen, will help participants learn more about beekeeping and how the honeybee lives and produces honey. Also get the chance to roll bees wax into a small candle to take home! For all ages. Chicken and Egg: This workshop is a hands-on presentation of information about eggs and the care of chickens as a hobby, taught by 4-H volunteer Susan Whalen. For ages 5-10. 4-H Parents VIPs!: 4-H parents have important roles in 4-H and there is much they need to know! This workshop, taught by 4-H Program Leader Sherrie Guyott, is for all 4-H parents to learn more about the 4-H program and how they can maximize the experience for their children as well as themselves. It is also for all 4-H leaders to learn how parents can be more involved with the 4-H club.

Birthday Angels: Come make this fun craft for any birthday occasion with 4-H volunteer Sandy Silvia. For all ages. 4-H Records Made Easy: Members, are you thinking about doing 4-H records? Have you done 4-H records in the past and have some questions? Parents, would you like to be able to help your children complete records? 4-H records teach important life and work skills and are used as the basis to determine some 4-H awards. Members, parents and leaders are encouraged to participate in this workshop to learn more. This workshop is led by 4-H Program Leader Sherrie Guyott. For ages 8 and up. 4-H Animal Judging A World of Opportunities: Learn about all the opportunities available in dairy, livestock and horse judging. Judging animals has lifelong effects on the individual participating in this activity. Gaining animal industry knowledge, the opportunity to travel and to network with other youth with similar interests are just a few of the perks available to 4-H youth who are interested in animal judging. The panel consists of Carrie Chickering-Sears of the UMass Vet Science Dept., Livestock Judging Coaches Paul Dunn & Kathy Dugan, and 4-H youth who have participated in 2012 judging contests. For all ages. Risk Management in the Animal World: Participants will learn and then go through a team activity to evaluate a SWOT Analysis (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities & Threats) involved in any animal project. This activity, taught by Carrie Chickering-Sears of the UMass Vet Science Dept., will also help you enhance your 4-H records. For adults and youth ages 13 and up. Drama Games: Love to pretend? Then this is the workshop for you. Have fun trying on a different persona. Theater games such as Park Bench and Catch a Story will be taught. 4-H volunteer Laura Anderson will be teaching this workshop for all ages. Puppets: Have fun making a puppet and putting on a small play with your new puppet. This workshop is for all ages and will be taught by 4-H volunteer Laura Anderson. We Love 4-H: Hands-on crafts to celebrate being a 4-Her. Well make paper 4-H clovers and a wooden ornament to show our 4-H pride. Taught by 4-H volunteer Evelyn Taylor, this workshop is for all ages but ages 5-9 may need an adult partner. Funky Chicken: If you love chickens, then come and make a chicken to take home. Well have many different chicken craft to join your coop. Dont be a chicken! Join this workshop and well discuss pet chickens. Taught by 4-H volunteer Evelyn Taylor, this workshop is for all ages but ages 5-9 may need an adult partner. Leaping Leprechauns: Irish native and 4-H volunteer Evelyn Taylor loves leprechauns and all things Irish. Well make a leprechaun craft and celebrate being Irish for a day. All you ever wanted to know about leprechauns but were afraid to ask. This workshop is for all ages. Paint a Breyer Horse: In this fun workshop, you will paint a Breyer Horse model. Learn about horse coloring and breeds. Taught by 4-H volunteer Gerri Schell. For ages 9 and up.

4-H Horse Buzzer Board: Learn about how to participate in the 4-H Horse Bowl contest! Also practice your knowledge during a real buzzer board contest. Taught by 4-H Educator Valerie Schell, this workshop is for ages 8 and up. Social Media Workshop: Learn about how to set up a 4-H website or Facebook page. Learn the advantages and challenges around using social media for your 4H club. For ages 12 and up, this workshop is taught by 4-H Educator Valerie Schell. Winning 4-H Presentations: Learn how to put together an award winning visual presentation and have a chance to get all your questions answered. This workshop is for all ages and will be taught by a 4-H Teen Ambassador and 4-H volunteer Cathy Acampora. 4-H Livestock Jeopardy: Livestock Jeopardy is an interactive knowledge game played with buzzers to answer questions about livestock and 4-H in general. Livestock Jeopardy categories are poultry, goat, rabbit, dairy cow, beef cow, swine, sheep and 4-H trivia. Come find out more about Livestock Jeopardy with 4-H volunteer Robin Clapp and even get a chance to play along! For ages 8 and up. Biscuit Pizzas: Learn how to make a simple meal from biscuit rolls. This workshop, taught by 4-H volunteer Sandy Silvia, is for all ages. Participants will have the opportunity to enjoy their biscuit pizzas as a snack that day. Health Kids Out of School: Join Healthy Kids Out of School for a bingo game that helps program leaders and volunteers identify solutions for common barriers to promoting healthy eating, healthy drinking, and increasing physical activity during their programs. Prizes will be awarded at this workshop for teens and adults taught by Alyssa Koomas, the programs regional project manager from Tufts University.
