On Schism and Heresy: An Argument for Orthodoxyand the Tri-hypostatic Godhead
 By Dimmtri Christou
On the topic of the Church being guided into all truth (
ἐν τῇ

ἀληθείᾳ

πάσῃ
), aswe read from John 16:13, if we suppose that the Church is not only susceptible to error but is capable of remaining in a state of heresy we consequentially implicate the
 perichoresis
 , which is the inter-
penetration, or in other words the ‘co
-
inherence’ of theSpirit within Son. As Maximos Aghiorghoussis explains, “[…] at
the level of the HolyTrinity, the Spirit becomes the Anointment of the flesh of Jesus; for it is through theSpirit
and with the synergy of the Spirit
that everything is created by the Logos andmade perfect in the Spirit. The humanity of Christ is no exc
eption.” (‘ChristianExistentialism of the Greek Fathers: Persons, Essence, and Energies in God’, p. 20)Following Maximos’ reasoning, if the Church is understood therefore as Christ’s Body
wherein the Holy Spirit wholly inheres it follows that the Church will be guided into alltruth
in what other manner can the Church remain kept? However, if we suppose thecontrary, then, in that case, we implicitly create a distinction in the relationship betweenthe Holy Spirit and the Son. This is, however, by nature impossible. As it is precisely
because the Holy Spirit which anointed Christ’s flesh is the same Holy Spirit which
remains in the Church;
and it is precisely because the Church proper is Christ’s Body
that the Holy Spirit inheres therein. Any attempt to begin by speaking of a Church inerror therefore implicates the perichoresis of the tri-hypostatic Godhead.
