STRATFORD LIBRARY SETS 2013 BOOK DISCUSSION SERIES


The Stratford Library has announced its selections for the Winter/Spring 2013 series of Books Over Coffee, the monthly book discussion program that has been a popular staple at the library for over 25 years. As part of its long-range plan, the library continues to offer the latest in current titles and topics for its patrons. Books Over Coffee is hosted by Stratford educator and author Kathleen Faggella. Current bestsellers and notable authors mark the selections chosen for Books Over Coffee. The Light Between Oceans is author M.L. Stedmans debut novel set on an

isolated island where a childless couple come upon the chance to suddenly become parents. The moral dilemmas facing the couple form the conflict inherent in this

mesmerizing new novel. The book will kick-off the 2013 Books Over Coffee series on Wednesday, January 30 at noon. Other book titles for the season will be The Twelve Tribes of Hattie by Ayana Mattes (February 27), Call the Midwife a memoir by Jennifer Worth (March 27), The Silver Linings Playbook by Matthew Quick (April 24), The Paris Wife by Paula McLain (May 29) and Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn (June 26). Books Over Coffee is held in the Stratford Librarys Lovell Room beginning at noon each month. Participants are invited to bring a bag lunch; coffee and tea are also served. Copies of all books are currently available for loan at the librarys Circulation Desk. The titles are also available for loan on Kindle and Nook eReaders. The discussion programs are free and open to the public.

LIBRARY SETS PUBLIC TECHNOLOGY CLASSES


Basic Assistance on E-Readers, Tablet Computers, iPods, MP3 Players
Due to popular demand, the Stratford Library will continue its series of invaluable workshops designed to help adults learn about new technologies and applications currently on the market. Technology Sandbox" will include basic assistance dealing with the use of E-Readers, tablet computers, MP3 players, iPods and more. The Librarys professional staff will conduct the workshops scheduled through January 2013. They are free and open to the public. Patrons are invited to bring their e-readers, iPods, smartphones, laptops or mobile devices for instructions on their capabilities and to discover how to download library materials for free. Open sessions will be on the following schedule, first-come, first-served: Monday, January 7: 10 am-Noon Thursday, January 17: 2-4 pm Thursday, January 24: 10 am-Noon Monday, January 28: 10 am-Noon All sessions will be held in the Stratford Library Lovell Room. LIBRARY TO CLOSE FOR KING HOLIDAY

The Stratford Library, 2203 Main Street in Stratford will be closed on Sunday, January 20 and Monday, January 21, 2013 in observance of the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday. The library will reopen on Tuesday, January 22 at 10 am. Current library hours are: Monday-Thursday: 10 am 8 pm, FridaySaturday: 10 am 5 pm and Sunday: 1-5 pm. Librarys Friday Night Movies Offers Dark Knight


Blockbuster Hit Set for January 11th in Stratford
The Stratford Librarys Friday Night Movies continues in 2013 with a screening of the 2012 blockbuster, The Dark Knight Rises on Friday, January 11th. The series presents recent, popular films on monthly Friday evenings, September through June. showing is free and open to the public. One of last years biggest hits, The Dark Knight Rises is director Christopher Nolans final chapter in his critically acclaimed trilogy of Batman movies. In this latest The film

entry, it has been eight years since Batman vanished into the night, turning from hero to fugitive. Assuming the blame for the death of Harvey Dent, the Dark Knight sacrificed

everything for what he and Commissioner Gordon both hoped was the greater good. Christian Bale stars as the title character with Anne Hathaway as Catwoman and Tom Hardy as Bane, the villain. Movies in the series are shown uncut on widescreen in the Stratford Library Lovell Room beginning at 7 pm (sharp!). The Dark Knight Rises is rated PG-13 and runs 165 minutes. Complimentary snacks are served. Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis.

The Stratford Library continues its monthly film series in 2013 with Friday Night Movies. The series offers free showings of recent, popular films. Movies are shown uncut on widescreen in the Stratford Library Lovell Room each month beginning at 7 pm. Complimentary snacks will be served. Join us!

May 10: Magic Mike


Set in the world of male strippers, film stars Channing Tatum in a story inspired by his real life. The movie follows Mike (Tatum) as he takes a young dancer under his wing and schools him in the fine arts of partying, picking up women and making easy money. One of 2012s surprise hits. June 14: Skyfall


In the latest 007 entry, James Bonds (Daniel Craig) loyalty to M (Judi Dench) is tested as her past comes back to haunt her. Meanwhile, Bond must track down and destroy a new threat no matter how personal the cost. Javier Bardem plays his nemesis. PG-13, 143 minutes

Knitting for Kids at the Stratford Library


Knitting for Kids at the Stratford Library will meet Mondays, January 14 and 28, 2013 at 4 pm for children ages 7 to 12. Knitters are asked to bring short needles (US sizes 8-11 recommended). Art Smart
Art Smart at the Stratford Library invites children in grades 1 to 5 to examine, evaluate and enjoy picture book art. Based on the idea of the Caldecott Award, given annually for excellence in illustration, members of the committee will make their own predictions for this year's best picture books. Children will learn about different art mediums used in picture book illustration, share their favorite books with the group and vote for their Caldecott picks. The class will meet Tuesdays, January 15 and 22 from 4-5 pm. Children are asked to attend both meetings. The program is free and all supplies will be provided at the first meeting. Read to Therapy Dogs

Hobbit Party!
The Stratford Library will host a Hobbit Party for children and adults ages 8 to 88 on Saturday, January 19 from 2:30 to 4 pm in the Librarys Lovell Room. Hobbits are fantastical characters in JRR Tolkiens classic novel, currently on movie screens, and they love parties. At the party, children will be invited to play Smaugs Treasure Hunt board game, go on a quest, write their name in runes and enjoy other hobbit activities. As with every Hobbit Party, cake and presents will be served to guests. Registration is required. To
