HYPER GEOMETRIC DISTRIBUTION
DEFINITION
A random variable
 X
follows the hyper geometric distribution withparameters
 N
,
m
and
n
if its probability mass function is given by:Where is the binomial coefficient; it is non-negative when
.
The hyper geometric distribution is a discreteprobability distributionthat describes the number

of successes in a sequence of
‘n’
draws from a finite population without replacement, just asthebinomial distributiondescribes the number of successes for draws with replacement.
 APPLICATION
The classical application of the hyper geometric distribution is sampling without replacement.
Example
: a pot with two types of marbles, black ones and white ones. Define drawing a whitemarble as a success and drawing a black marble as a failure (analogous to the binomialdistribution). If the variable N describes the number of
all marbles in the pot
(see contingencytable below) and m describes the number of
white marbles
, then N
m corresponds to thenumber of
black marbles
. In this example X is the random variable whose outcome is k, thenumber of white marbles actually drawn in the experiment. This situation is illustrated by thefollowing contingency table:

k m
k m

 N + k n

 N − m
