Chapter 1: A Hard LifeWherever there's a family, there's always bound to be an argument at some point.Families fall out all of the time; but always find a way to settle things. However, that isn’t always the case for some families, and for this particularone, arguments happened all of the time.Mjeuri was a violent lion with a heart of hate and darkness. He had always longedfor a son, but all he had was his mate, Johari, and his four daughters. Ada, theireldest, was a tough lioness who looked up to her father, but always sided with hermother when the two found something to argue about. She was a dusky brown colour, almost grey with grey eyes.Ye was her younger sister, who was brown in colour, and she had dark brown eyes. She was sweet natured and sided with her mother when arguments occurred but neverlooked up to her father; in fact, she hated him. That didn't stop her hating Adahowever, or Katili.Katili was a dark golden colour with the slightest grey tint to her coat. Shelooked a lot like her mother but was a lot thinner and leaner. She had dark blueeyes and could be fierce if she needed to be. She was a hard nut; and, was thenext best thing that Mjeuri had to a son. She cared about her sisters and motheralthough her mother and Ada rather looked down to her and didn't respect her asmuch as they probably should have done. And, although her father beat her, she didher best to defend him, even when he beat up Ada and Ye. Not even Johari wouldstop him and Zakiya was too young to do anything about it.Zakiya was the youngest daughter of the pride, and her three older sisters werevery protective. She was a dark brown adolescent with dark brown eyes. She tookafter her father with her looks, but was nothing like him at all. She was verycaring and sweet natured, and again, like her eldest sisters, took her mother'sside against her fathers. But she cared about Katili, although she was verydifferent in nature. The pride lived far beyond the Eastern border of a popular land known as theSpirit Lands. The pride didn't have a name and didn't have many members. Itconsisted only of Mjeuri, his mate, and their daughters.“Katili,” Ada said one warm afternoon, approaching her younger sister who waslying lazily in the sun.“What do you want?” Katili asked impatiently. Ada growled quietly but stopped whenYe trotted over.“You were meant to do the hunt for this afternoon; where have you been?” Adasnapped at Katili. Katili sat up and swished her tail about.“I forgot,” she said simply, licking her paw. Ada growled.“You forgot? Katili, we've been waiting ages; and what about you? What have youbeen eating?”“I haven’t eaten yet,” Katili shot, narrowing her eyes; “I’ll get something for uslater. Ada growled even louder but Ye pinned her ears back and stepped forward.“Ada, give the girl a break,” she said“Leave it, Ye,” Katili mumbled, glancing at her. Ye pinned her ears again.

“Just stop with the bickering, both of you,” she said, walking away. Ada watchedher and then turned her head sharply to look at Katili.“Mum's gonna be mad,” she warned. Katili rolled her eyes.“Yeah .I'm so scared,” she scoffed sarcastically. Ada clenched her teeth togetherand walked past Katili; batting her nose with her tail doing so. Katili had theurge to bite down hard on Ada’s tail, but instead she sighed and let it go. Adaturned her head.“Oh yeah, and Dad will be even more angry.” She warned her. Katili tutted, as ifto say she didn’t care. She looked at the perfectly cloudless sky before followingher older sister back to the den. When she arrived, the atmosphere was tense. Her mother glared at her and herfather got up and walked towards her.“Where's the food?” he asked. Katili sniffed.“I haven’t had chance to get any yet.” She explained. Mjeuri growled loudly. Frombehind a tree, Zakiya watched quietly.“And why not? You have had the entire morning to hunt,” He responded, glaring ather.“Been lazing around sunbathing all day Father,” Ada answered, narrowing her eyes.Mjeuri turned to look at Ada, and then back at Katili. “She just can’t bebothered, to put it simply.”“So, been sleeping on the job, have we?” Mjeuri growled fiercely, “What do youthink gives you the right to rest all day when you have a job to do?” All of thelioness except for Katili and Johari moved back a bit.“I didn't feel like it Father,” Katili hissed. Mjeuri growled and narrowed hisevil, dark brown eyes into slits. Katili turned to leave. “Get you own food ifyou’re hungry. I know I'm not.” She started to make her way out but Ye went afterher.“Didn’t feel like it,” Mjeuri repeated. He roared and knocked Ye aside and pouncedat Katili. He hit her over the head hard with his paw. Katili didn't fall, but shestumbled a bit. Her vision was blurred and then doubled itself before it returnedto normal. “Go now. Go and catch something. No daughter of mine will be lazy.”“Yes, Father,” Katili said, her voice low. Her ears and head now pounding, Katilimoved away from the Pride and into the hunting areas. Ye placed a paw over herhead where she had been knocked aside. Zakiya watched from behind the tree andnarrowed her eyes. Then she turned and followed Katili's route. Ye and Ada staredat their father, wondering if they should say something.“Well, what are you two looking at? Get out of my sight!” He finally yelled atthem. The two almost full-grown lionesses didn't hesitate and walked away fromtheir parents. Johari lay on the ground. She wouldn't do anything about himbeating her daughters.Katili lay in the grass. “Stuff them,” she thought, “they can wait. I'll huntlater.” A rustling behind her interrupted her thoughts. She turned and saw Zakiyastanding there on the verge of tears.
