2Referring to the revelations recordedin the Doctrine and Covenants, theLord said, “Search these command-ments, for they are true and faithful,and the prophecies and promiseswhich are in them shall all befulfilled” (D&C 1:37). As you study theDoctrine and Covenants and Churchhistory in Gospel Doctrine class and inyour families this year, you have theopportunity to learn of command-ments, prophecies, and promises thatwill help you draw nearer to the Lord.
Format of This Study Guide
This study guide has been preparedto help you study the Doctrine andCovenants and Church history. Theguide is divided into numberedsections that correspond with thelessons in the Doctrine and Covenantsand Church History Gospel Doctrinecourse. Each section provides theweek’s reading assignment, along withquestions and other information toenhance your study. You may use thequestions to improve personalapplication of the scriptures and toprepare to make meaningful contribu-tions to class discussions. You mayalso use the study guide to promptgospel-centered discussions amongfamily members.Also included in each section is a scrip-ture chain—a list of scripture passagesthat relate to the reading assignment.You may want to write these lists inthe back of your scriptures. You mayalso want to develop your ownscripture chains by selecting passagesfrom the lists in the Topical Guide andthe information in the BibleDictionary. To highlight a scripturechain in your scriptures, mark in yourscriptures the first passage in the list.Beside that passage write the referencefor the second passage in the list. Turnto the second passage, mark it, andwrite the reference for the thirdpassage. Continue until you havemarked the last passage in the list, andcomplete the chain by writing next tothat passage the reference for the firstpassage.Pages 25–26 of this study guidecontain the complete text of “TheFamily: A Proclamation to the World.”You can refer to the proclamation asyou study the material in lesson 45.The study guide also contains achronology of Church history (pages27–28) and three maps of significantChurch history sites (pages 29–31).The book
Our Heritage: A Brief History of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints
(35448) will also give youbackground information on Churchhistory. Many of the lessons in thecourse will include a reading assign-ment from this book. You may alreadyhave a copy of 
Our Heritage
in yourhome. If not, speak with your teacherabout obtaining a copy.
Contributing to Class Discussions
You share with your Gospel Doctrineteacher the responsibility to help theclass be successful. Come to class pre-pared to contribute to the discussionand to share personal testimony,feelings, and experiences regarding theprinciples and doctrines being taught.

The Bible, the books of Moses andAbraham in the Pearl of Great Price,and the Book of Mormon are ancienttestaments, or witnesses, of JesusChrist. The Doctrine and Covenantsis a testament of Jesus Christ given inthis dispensation.

How is the Doctrine and Covenantsdifferent from other books of scripture? (See the third paragraphin the Explanatory Introduction.)On 1 November 1831, the Prophet Joseph Smith presided at a specialconference of elders, held in Hiram,Ohio. Those in attendance decided tocompile some of the revelations theProphet had received and publishthem in a book called the Book of Commandments. Following the firstsession of this conference, the Lordsignified His approval for thepublication by giving Joseph Smith arevelation that He called “my prefaceunto the book of my commandments”(D&C 1:6). This revelation is nowsection 1 of the Doctrine andCovenants.What warnings does the Lord issuein D&C 1?
