This chapter provides a general overview of the Search and Rescue(SAR) organization and basic skills and knowledge required to conductSAR operations as a boat crew member.A successful rescue mission depends on correct search planning andexecution. The dramatic image of a Coast Guard boat battling wind andsea in the dead of night to save a helpless mariner is only part of the story.The rest of the story involves collecting essential information, planningthe correct response, assessing the risk, selecting the proper search andrescue unit, and exercising proper safety precautions.
