In the nonprot sector, there are various titles usedfor the highest ranking fund development staff position. For the purposes ofthis study we use the title development director to mean the staff person in thehighest ranking development position within the organization.

Cultivation is dened as any activitythat builds awareness and connection for donors/funders and prospectivedonors/funders with your organization, and increases your understanding ofwhy someone might give to your organization. Fund development includesfundraising which is the specic methods used to secure charitable donations(e.g. annual fund, face-to-face asks, online, proposals, etc.).

While familiar to fundraising professionals, theterm culture of philanthropy is not yet well understood nor commonly usedacross the sector. Not to be confused with institutional grant making or theact of giving money as a donor, a culture of philanthropy refers to a set oforganizational values and practices that support and nurture developmentwithin a nonprot organization. For the purposes of this study we used thefollowing denition: Most people in the organization (across positions) actas ambassadors and engage in relationship building. Everyone promotesphilanthropy and can articulate a case for giving. Fund development is viewedand valued as a mission-aligned program of the organization. Organizationalsystems are established to support donors. The executive director is committedand personally involved in fundraising.
