TheThousandIslands are achain of islands thatstraddle theU.S-Canadaborder in theSaintLawrenceRiver as itemergesfrom thenortheastcorner of LakeOntario. Theislandsstretch forabout 50 mi(80 km)downstreamfromKingston,OntarioCanadianislands are inthe province of Ontario. TheU.S. islands arein the state of New York. Theislands, whichnumber 1,865in all, range insize from over100 km²(40 sq mi) tosmaller islandsoccupied by asingleresidence, toeven smalleruninhabitedoutcroppings of rocks that arehome tomigratorywaterfowl.
The number of islands was determined using the criteria that any islandmust be above water level for 365 days per year, bigger than one squarefoot (roughly 900 cm²), and support at least one tree or shrub.The area is very popular among vacationers, campers, and boaters, and isoften referred to as the 'fresh water boating capital of the world.'
