The essays in this volume originated as the fruit of a symposium, held on March 7, 2003, on the topic 'Apocalypticism, Anti-Semitism, and the Historical Jesus: Subtexts in Criticism'. The point of the symposium and the volume which came from it was not to debate, yet again, whether the historical Jesus ought to be thought of as an apocalypticist of some variety, or to discuss the particular location within Second Temple Judaism that he and his immediate followers occupied. Instead, it was to ask why these issues are seen to matter as topics of intellectual inquiry and matter so acutely. For these two topics have come to mark the fault lines in much of the recent scholarly literature on the historical Jesus.
