SIERRA VISTA — Last year the city implemented a code change to encourage builders to install atechnology that effec-tively conserves waterand energy, resultingin significant savingstohomeowners.“The problem with this is nobody’s doingit,” Planning Adminis-trator Don Brush said,duringameetingoftheEnvironmental AffairsCommission this week.Outof147buildingper-mits issued since Dec.9, zero on-demand hot waterpumpshavebeenused in new construc-tion even though city code was amended toexplicitlyallowthemat noextracost.The code spells out that builders do not - f - , - -ff f - . - again. This time tomandate on-demand pumps for new con-struction.Commission MemberDennis Ehrenbergergot a hot water on-de-mand pump installed inhisownhomeandat-testedtothefactthatit is a lot cheaper than atimer pump because it is not always running.Yetitalsohasthebene-fitofsimplyhavinghot water when you want it without a complicat-ed set-up. “It’s just soeasy,”hesaid.While the city hasrequired dedicated re-turn lines since 2000 in an effort to save wa-ter, builders typically installed timer pumpsthatwasteenergy.Asaresult, many residentshave simply unplugged the timer pumps be-cause energy costsmorethanwater. , -, f - ff f -- . f - , - f f
