THIS WEEK’S PROGRAM
 
Hans Peter Metzgar is an international educator. Heis a Canadian, has worked in both Italy and Spainand is multilingual.What would become Saklan School was started in1954 in Lafayette by Gertrude Nielson and moved toMoraga in 1966. The Saklan School became a non-profit organization in 1978. A middle school wasadded in 1990. The Saklan School is an AccreditedIndependent School.Students come to the school from all surroundingcommunities. The student body, which draws from allsurrounding communities, currently stands at 107
 –
 slightly down from its maximum of 160. Bus serviceis offered by the school. Studies at the school stresscommunity service including work with the food bank,crises centers, senior living facilities and lake cleanupefforts.Saklan features small class sizes with a focus on artmusic and language. Starting with an elementaryprogram, the school has added both early childhoodand middle school programs. The school is movingto electronic (i.e. IPAD based) text books and willprovide more transportation choices for the
students’
.Due to small class sizes, teachers can offer individualstudent mentoring that will build self confidence instudents.The cost of the school ranges from about 12thousand a year for kindergarten to $22 thousand for middle school
