What is purpose/ intent?
When reading a source, it is always good to look out for the purpose of the source (whenthe inference question is 6 marks). The purpose of the source refers to the reasons why asource is written in a certain way. It looks at the function of the source as well. Most sources have a purpose behind it. Purpose is most useful when the source isopinionated. You will need a good grasp of historical knowledge to help you in findingout the purpose of a source. Some of the questions we ask in order to find out the purpose of the source include:
Who wrote the source?
Who is the target audience of the source?
Why is the source written/ depicted in a certain way? (Is there sarcasm or anironic tone in the source)
Is the source written accurately and tally with what we know?
LORMS for inferential question
L1 DESCRIBES THE SOURCE/ LIFTING FROM SOURCE (1)L2 INFERENCE UNSUPPORTED (2-3)L3 INFERENCE SUPPORTED (4-5)
L4 PURPOSE/ INTENT OF SOURCE (6)
Function of Purpose for Inferential Questions
A L4 answer (if there is one) is not one that states two inferences from the source and a purpose of the source. It is one that has two basic inferences derived from what thesource tells you and a third
inference based on the purpose
of the source. The inference must also answer what is required from the question. For example, if thequestion asks “What does Source B show you about the religious beliefs of the Shang people”, all your inferences, including the one that is inferred from the purpose of thesource must relate to the religious beliefs of the Shang people.

SOURCE BASED QUESTION: INFERENCING FOR PURPOSE MR. LESLIE TAY

Suggested Answering Format
Recall for a basic inference, we use the following format:We can infer from Source A that …........
 your inference
................ We know this asSource A shows …...........
 your evidence
................. This suggests that ….........
elaboration of evidence
.............., thus allowing us to infer that …............
 your inference
...................Your evidence for a basic inference usually includes quotes from the source or arephrasing of words from the source. For an inference based on a purpose, we use the same format. Where does your purposecome in then?We can infer from Source A that …........
 your inference
................ We know this asSource A shows …...........
 your evidence (purpose of source)
................. This suggests that….........
elaboration of evidence
.............., thus allowing us to infer that …............
 your inference
...................In other words, you are relying on the purpose of the source to make an inference.Sometimes, you may have to quote words from the source to show you how you arrive toyour purpose but the
main evidence
for your inference based on purpose is
the purpose
.
Is it worth it?
As you can see, inferring based on purpose is no easy task. It involves higher order thinking. And how many mark(s) is an inference based on purpose worth? One.
My advice: If you are very confident that your inference based on purpose is right, then go ahead penit down. But if you have difficulty in trying to get an inference based on purpose/ you arenot confident that your inference is right, then go on to the next question. Leave a fewlines between your second inference and the answer of the next question so that you cancome back to the question later if you have time. Remember inference based on purposeis worth only one mark. Do not spend too much time on it.
