Letter to my U.S. Representatives andSenators on the Second Amendment
Honorable Senators and Congressman:I respectfully submit my feelings on the current federal gun legislation, now in themaking. It is important that there should be no Federal action concerning private gun ownership. With the exception of violent criminals and the mentally ill, any infringement on thepeople's right to keep and bear arms is a clear violation of the Second Amendment of the Bill of Rights and would be perceived as such by a large segment of the population.Gun regulation must be enacted on the state level only. Americans must be free to "votewith their feet" so they might reside in an environment in which they are comfortablewith the level of freedom a given state might afford.
The Supreme Court on the Right to Keep and Bear Arms
In 2008 the Supreme Court found:The Second Amendment protects an individual right to possess a firearmunconnected with service in a militia, and to use that arm for traditionally lawfulpurposes, such as self-defense within the home.
The Founders on the Right to Keep and Bear Arms
"I ask, Sir, what is the militia? It is the whole people. To disarm the people is the bestand most effectual way to enslave them."George MasonCo-author of the Second AmendmentThe strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as alast resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government. - Thomas Jefferson,Third President of the United States."Firearms stand next in importance to the constitution itself. They are the Americanpeople's liberty teeth and keystone under independence from the hour the Pilgrimslanded to the present day, events, occurrence's and tendencies prove that to ensurepeace security and happiness, the rifle and pistol are equally indispensable the veryatmosphere of firearms anywhere restrains evil interference they deserve a place of honor with all that's good."

George WashingtonFirst President of the United States"The supposed quietude of a good man allures the ruffian; while on the other handarms, like laws, discourage and keep the invader and plunderer in awe, and preserveorder in the world as property. The same balance would be preserved were all the worlddestitute of arms, for all would be alike; but since some will not, others dare not lay themaside Horrid mischief would ensue were the law-abiding deprived of the use of them."-Thomas Paine"To preserve liberty, it is essential that the whole body of the people always possessarms and be taught alike, especially when young, how to use them."Richard Henry Lee American Statesman, 1788"The great object is that every man be armed." and "Everyone who is able may have agun."Patrick Henry American Patriot"Those who hammer their guns into plowshares will plow for those who do not."Thomas JeffersonThird President of the United States
The Law on the Right to Keep and Bear Arms
The Militia Act of 1792 would require that all able-bodied white males enroll in themilitia and provide their own arms. Both the power of the states to maintain militias andthe right of individuals to have arms for self-defense were considered basic.

Legal guns as a deterrent to violent crime: Crime statistics from the FBIand UK Daily Mail.
Contrary to common perceptions, today crime is more widespread in Europe than in theUS, while the opposite was true thirty years ago. In 1970 the aggregate crime rate in the

seven European countries we consider was 63% the corresponding US figure, but by2007 it was 85% higher than in the US.
1
The UK experiences 5 times as many violent crimes as the USA:1) UK has strict gun control laws.UK annual violent crime rate: 2,034 violent crimes/ 100,000 inhabitants
2
(UKDaily Mail)2) US have about 270,000,000 guns
3
(WP) in the hands of approximately80,000,000 private citizens.US annual violent crime rate: 386.3 violent crimes
4
/ 100,000 inhabitants
5
(FBI)3) On September 13, 2004 the Federal Assault Weapons Ban sunset. Whenconsidering 5- and 10-year trends, the 2011 estimated violent crime total was15.4 percent below the 2007 level and 15.5 percent below the 2002 level.(FBI)Faced with the reported data, it appears, the threat of an armed response by a potentialvictim to an assailant has a substantial effect on reducing the incidence of violent crime.
The Right to Keep and Bear Arms through History
Classical Greece
: "Tyranny derives from the oligarchy's mistrust of the people; hencethey deprive them of arms, ill-treat the lower class, and keep them from residing in thecapital. These are common to oligarchy and tyranny."
