Basic Aerodynamics& Theory of Flight
ByAhmad Ahsan

Winglets
Winglets are vertical extensions of wingtips that improve an aircraft's fuelefficiency and cruising range.

Designed as small airfoils, winglets reduce the aerodynamic dragassociated with vortices. By reducing wingtip drag:a)fuel consumption goes downb)range is extended
For transport-size aircraft with winglets efficiency during cruise isimproved to between 6% and 9%.
Research by NASA in 1979-80 onBoeing 707 jetliner recorded anincreased fuel mileage rate of 6.5%.
