WELCOME – HEAD TEACHER, HEAD BOY/GIRL
It gives me great pleasure to introduce the 2013/14 Knox Academy Handbook. This is a six-year, truly comprehensive school, offering a wide curriculum of certificated courses andan extensive choice of cultural, sporting and outdoor activities. Pupils are encouraged to develop avariety of interests and skills in order to fulfil their potential. The school aims to help pupils to taketheir place in the community, and for employment or further and higher education. This Handbook provides information regarding the structures that are in place to ensure a caring andorderly environment in the school enabling pupils to develop into confident and capable young adults. If we do not manage to answer all of your questions here, please contact the school to seek clarification or further information. Also, parents are encouraged to visit the school; please contact theschool office to arrange an appointment.Partnership with parents is hugely important to us at Knox Academy and I look forward to meetingyou at parents’ evenings, school functions or on an individual basis.Very best wishes,S InghamHead Teacher “And in today already walks tomorrow.” – ColeridgeThroughout our 6-year career as pupils at Knox Academy, we have been given an abundance of newexperiences. At the time in our life where we are contemplating our futures, we can look back at our time here and say that we are prepared for what may lie ahead after a rewarding and fulfillingeducation at Knox Academy. The success of Knox Academy could be due to the strong links we have with our surroundingcommunity. From the time we begin our journey with the school, we are encouraged to work alongside members of the community whilst maintaining a respectable image as ambassadors for theschool. Predominantly in S6, pupils volunteer with a range of groups both in school and outwith thecampus; ranging from primary schools to charity shops. The community are also supported by KnoxAcademy’s School Council; an elected team of pupil representatives who work to ensure the smoothrunning of the pupil body. The School Council also play an active role in observing and participatingin Haddington Community Council meetings in order to promote the school’s identity and aims.As well as having ties with the community, we are also glad to say that Knox Academy boasts astrong rapport between pupils and staff. When a pupil first arrives at the school, their relationship isnot only consecrated amongst friends but also with their various teachers. The continuity in teachingstyles and approaches ensures the process of learning is accessible to everyone. In particular, significant support is given through stressful periods (eg exam time). We recognise that this supporthas contributed to Knox Academy’s current impressive academic results. We feel that Knox must also be praised for its diverse variety of extra-curricular actives ranging fromsports to debating and music to cooking. There really is something for everyone. Our most recentsuccesses were with the KWN (Kid Witness News) group. Earlier this year, they achieved THEGlobal Best Documentary Award competing against students from all over the world! Talent at KnoxAcademy is nurtured with the motivation of competing at a range of different levels.Attending Knox Academy has been a very gratifying experience. We are proud to call ourselves Knox pupils and it has been a privilege being the Head Boy and Girl for this year. We are confident that allfuture pupils will enjoy their time here and invest in the community as much as we have.Ben Nisbet – Head BoyErin Lowe – Head Girl
