CHAPTER TWO
Towards Transformation of the Learning Environment
T
ransformation involves learning as you go, identifying the common
.. themes and applying some consistent core principles to what will be a
messy process of continual improvement. Within transformational
action in education, there are several vital themes:
The purpose of leading is to improve student learning outcomes.
All members of the school community are learners.
e All participants need a shared knowledge of of a
community oflearners and a community of inquiry.
Transformation is continuous and involves transition or
"in-betweenness," a state between now and theJuture (Tasmania 2002).
Principles of Educational leadership
For school leaders, the following principles provide the underlying thread to
help make sense of what leadership looks like in the constantly changing con-
texts in which we lead. These principles have been developed with reference to
the project "Building Leadership in Australian Schools" (Australian Principals
Associations Professional Development Council 2003).
Enact values and purposes with integrity and wisdom.
Effective leaders know themselves well and their actions are based on a
well-formed set of values, beliefs, and understandings. They are committed to a
moral purpose and vision and can achieve a community consensus on school
goals and priorities. They have the strength of character to persevere with this
purpose or vision or to change practices in the light of evolving understandings.
Enable others through quality relationships.
Effective leaders understand the nature of power and change, and know that the
quality of their relationships with students, staff, and community are crucial to
their ability to enable others. They promote an atmosphere of care and trust
within the school community, setting the tone for mutually respectful relation-
ships. This trust is increased by providing moral support, taking account of
people's opinions, and appreciating their work.
Promote a supportive and rich learning community.
Effective leaders are learners and know how to support and challenge the learn-
ing of others. They understand learning and teaching and focus on the improve-
ment of student outcomes and the building of learning communities with high
