The Newman Guide
General Information

There are eight colleges or universities in thisGui d e that have full-time undergradu- ate enrollment of more than 1,000 stu- dents. They are, in descending order: The Catholic University of America, Franciscan University of Steubenville, University of St. Thomas, Mount St. Mary\u2019s University, DeSales University, University of Dallas, Benedictine College and Belmont Abbey College.

There are seven colleges that have full- time undergraduate enrollment of fewer than 100 students. The smallest is Holy Apostles College & Seminary, followed by John Paul the Great Catholic University, Wyoming Catholic College, Our Lady Seat of Wisdom Academy, The College of Saint Thomas More, Magdalen College and The Thomas More College of Liberal Arts.

Mount St. Mary\u2019s University, which was founded in 1808 and is currently celebrat- ing its bicentennial, is the second-oldest college Catholic in the U.S. The newest in thisGui d e is Wyoming Catholic Col- lege, which opened its doors in September 2007.

Wyoming Catholic College became the

Southern Catholic College became the \ue000rst
in Georgia in 2005. Both states are experi-
encing rising Catholic populations.
The Catholic University of America is
a ponti\ue000cal university founded by U.S.
Catholic bishops as a national graduate in-
stitution in Washington, D.C., in 1887.

The Thomas More College of Liberal Arts has a unique humanities cycle curriculum that is taken by all students at the same time.

Colleges that require Latin or Greek as part of their core curriculum are Ave Maria University, The Thomas More College of Liberal Arts, The College of Saint Thomas More, Magdalen College, Our Lady Seat of Wisdom Academy and Wyoming Catholic College.

The Catholic University of America and the University of Dallas have Phi Beta Kappa chapters.

Magdalen College awards every qualify- ing graduate an Apostolic Catechetical Diploma in addition to a bachelor of arts degree.

The University of Dallas, Christendom College and The Thomas More College of Liberal Arts sponsor one-semester study- abroad programs that all or most of their

students a\ue003end, usually in the sophomore
year.

Magdalen College and The College of Saint Thomas More have short foreign study programs. Franciscan University of Steubenville has a program in Gaming, Austria. Several of the other colleges have some arrangements for students to study abroad.

Tuition for two colleges, Our Lady Seat of Wisdom Academy and Holy Apostles Col- lege & Seminary, is below $8,000 per year.

Colleges that are primarily commuter schools are Holy Apostles College & Semi- nary, Aquinas College and the University of St. Thomas.

The College of Saint Thomas More appeals to non-traditional students. Only about 25 percent of incoming freshmen enter from high school. Most of the students are in their 20s while some are in their 30s or older.

Nearly 80 percent of students at Aquinas
College are women.

The University of St. Thomas has the most ethnically diverse student body. Nearly one-half of undergraduates are non-white and about one-third are Hispanic.

Franciscan University is a prime example of a one-time troubled Catholic college that turned itself around to become one of the gems of U.S. Catholic higher education.

pates in NCAA Division I sports. It also has a unique program where seminarians serve as team chaplains for each of its 19 intercollegiate sports teams.

Specific Programs
DeSales University o\ue001ers a major in mar-
riage and the family. The major \ue000nds its
inspiration in the teaching of Pope John
Paul II\u2019s Theology of the Body.
Ave Maria University and Franciscan Uni-
versity of Steubenville o\ue001er majors in sa-
cred music.

The Catholic University of America and DeSales University have extensive drama departments. Belmont Abbey College\u2019s Abbey Players dates back to 1883.

John Paul the Great Catholic University has an unusual niche, focusing on busi- ness entrepreneurship and training lead- ers in New Media, including the entertain- ment industry.

Mount St. Mary\u2019s University has two coop-
erative health-related programs with other
universities. There is a \ue000ve-year program

in biology and nursing (two bachelor\u2019s de- grees) with The Johns Hopkins University and a six-year undergraduate-graduate program in occupational therapy with Sa- cred Heart University.

Undergraduate degrees in nursing also are available at Aquinas College, The Catholic University of America, DeSales University and Franciscan University of Steuben- ville.

DeSales University also has a notable un- dergraduate and graduate Physician As- sistant program. As part of its commu- nity outreach, students in the program launched the DeSales Free Clinic for home- less people in Allentown, Pennsylvania, in 2007. Faculty members and students oper- ate it.

an undergraduate degree in engineering. The University of St. Thomas has coopera- tive agreements for dual-degree programs

in the \ue000elds of engineering and technol-

ogy with Texas A & M University, Uni- versity of Houston and the University of Notre Dame.

Among The Catholic University\u2019s 12
schools is the School of Architecture and
Planning, which o\ue001ers a bachelor\u2019s degree

in architecture as well as professional and post-professional master\u2019s degrees. It is the only recommended college with an ar- chitecture program.

Belmont Abbey College, located near the

North Carolina, has a unique major in mo- tor sports management, complete with an internship.
