OUR MISSION STATEMENT:
FIRST NOTES
In ancient Rome, the14th of February was apagan holiday in honor of Juno, the goddess of women and marriage andthe queen of the RomanGods and goddesses.Later, however, it becamea Christian holiday namedafter a Christian priest.According to one churchtradition St. Valentine was apriest near Rome about theyear 270 A.D. At that timethe Roman Emperor wasimprisoning Christians fornot worshipping the Romangods. During this persecu-tion Valentine was arrested. Some say he was arrestedbecause he was performing Christian marriages, butothers say it was for helping Christians escape prison.During the trial theyasked Valentine what hethought of the Roman godsJupiter and Mercury. Of course Valentine said theywere false gods and thatthe God that Jesus calledFather was the only trueGod. So the Romans threwhim in prison for insulting the gods. While in prisonValentine continued tominister. He witnessed tothe guards. One of theguards was a good manwho had adopted a blindgirl. He asked Valentine if his God could help hisdaughter. Valentineprayed and the girl wasgiven her sight. The guardand his whole family, 46people, believed in Jesusand were baptized. Whenthe emperor heard aboutthis, he was furious thatValentine was still making converts even in prison, sohe had Valentine clubbedand beheaded.Valentine knew that hemight get caught in hisChristian activities. Heknew that if he told thecourt the truth about theRoman gods that he wouldbe thrown in prison. Andhe knew that if hecontinued to witness toChrist in the prison hewould make his captorsangry. But he continuedbecause he loved the Lordand his fellow humans. Hewas willing to risk his lifeto free the prisoners andspread the Good News of Jesus Christ to those whoneeded to hear it.As Jesus said, "Greaterlove has no one thanthis, that he lay down hislife for his friends." This iswhat Valentine did. Heloved and cared enoughfor his friends and lovedones (including his jailors)to introduce them to Jesusat the risk of his life, whichhe gave. And this is what God didfor us. While we were stillsinners Jesus died for us.So on this Valentine's Daylet us be quick to expressour love, not only to ourloved ones and friends, but also especially to theJesus who gave his life sothat we would be able tohave our sins forgiven andlive in peace with God,others and all of creation.
