BLACK SCREEN. THE SOUND OF A FLY BUZZING IN THE DISTANCE.DR.BURTON (V.O.)It's Doctor Burton, Don. Ignorethe fly... tell me what you can see.DON (V.O.)I see stones, tall flat stones.EXT. A CEMETERY IN MAGEDDO. DUSK.Title: MAGEDDO, Israel, near the border with Jordan. 1977.An ancient graveyard. The desert sand blows through thebroken tombstones, collecting on dried bracken, turnedorange in the evening sun.A flock of starlings ebb and flow in the dusky sky.A TODDLER (3) climbs across the stone tombs whilst a smallwhite goat plays around him, seemingly leading him andcorrecting his faltering steps.A large stone statue of an angel is surrounded by demonicgargoyles hewn out of the rock to protect the incumbents.The toddler reaches the foot of the statue, looks up andgiggles, seemingly unafraid of his strange surroundings.He shelters under the great stone wings, whilst the goatprotects him like a furry blanket. They wait in thefailing sun.INT. PREPARATION ROOM. "SMEE FAMILY FUNERAL SERVICES".HACKNEY. LONDON. DAY.DON DANTE (33) rests at peace in an open coffin leaningat an angle against the back wall of the Funeral parlor.His eyes are closed and his chest still. Gradually hispale cheeks begin to turn red.With a sudden release of air he lets go his breath andsmoke pours from his mouth.He raises the lit joint to his mouth and takes another puff.A gruff voice is heard.ERIC SMEE(os)Don? I'm back. How's Mrs Dribbledoing?Don nervously blows out the smoke and leaps from thecoffin, looking for somewhere to throw the joint.DONShe's still dead.
2.Across from him, lying in state is an elderly lady.With the sound of footsteps approaching, Don rushes overto the women, opens her mouth, and inserts the still litjoint.ERIC SMEE (54) appears in the doorway.Don closes the woman's open mouth with his thumb, but themuscles form a cracked smile.Eric looks over at the body.ERIC SMEEYou've done a man's job on her.You'd never tell it'd fallen off.DONThanks, Eric. She was a struggleI'll admit.Eric rifles through some paperwork on a table next to theempty coffin.Don shoots a look across at the body.A small trail of smoke is seeping out of the corner of thecorpse's mouth, presumably from the still smoking joint.He freezes with fear.ERIC SMEEBe suited and booted for a tenstart tomorrow, remember?Eric finds the piece of paper he's been searching for andexits.Don looks down at the corpse's darkly grinning face.DONWhat are you laughing at? I can'ttake much more of this.EXT. A HACKNEY CEMETERY, BACKING ON TO A PARK. DAY.Title: Hackney, London, near the border with Islington. 2007.DON DANTE jogs through the graveyard listening to his ipod,mindful not to step on any graves.He takes a long swig from his water bottle, momentarilytaking his eyes off the ground and causing him to run overa newly dug grave.The ridged imprint of his trainer is left on the earthwith a few crushed flowers for good measure.
