Friends of the Chicago River runs the Urban Canoe Adventures Program to provide a funway for Chicagoans to get to know their river. The program is built on extensivevolunteer support. Volunteer canoe guides receive free training from Friends inexchange for their help leading canoe trips during the summer season. Being a canoeguide is a fun and rewarding way to help Chicago learn to know and love its river again.Training for volunteers takes place on April 13 and 27, and it is mandatory. Volunteersare trained in CPR, First Aid, and paddling techniques, and attend workshops on topicssuch as Chicago history, ecology and water quality.

Canoe Guide Job Description
Be able to swim 50 yards and tread water for 3 minutes.Be able to carry a canoe short distances (canoes are usually carried by two people, and weighup to 90 pounds).Be comfortable traveling to many different areas of the city and suburbsBe able to attend trainings on weekends in the spring. Most trainings are a few hours inlength, but a few of them last all dayHave an interest in canoeing and in learning about the Chicago River
Complete training during the SpringVolunteer at three or more canoe events from May
October. Also, in addition, volunteer ata large sponsored event in the summer.Work with other guides to handle emergenciesLead discussions and answer questions about the Chicago RiverHelp organize groups of people participating in the canoe tripsHelp participants with paddling skillsWhen necessary, help participants carry and get into/out of their canoes
