A majority of the work done for this course will be done via the UVM BlackBoard Computer Systemas well as the Course Compass MyMathLab System. Both of these systems are very intuitive to use, but Iwill have
step-by-step instructions
posted along the way to ensure that students are do not feeloverwhelmed by the technology.Furthermore, I understand that technology can be
finicky 
at times, so I plan to be very understanding if anissue arises causing an unforeseen problem. The purpose of the class is for each student to increase his orher level of knowledge, and again, I want to ensure that this is done as stress free as possible.

Course Description:
 
Fundamentals of Calculus I
is the first course in a two course sequence. Theunderlying applications of differential calculus will be investigated (chapters 1
 –
6 and 13 of the Lialtextbook). This will include an understanding of 
 functions
,
limits
,
continuity 
,
rates of change
,
derivatives
 (including implicit), and
derivative applications
. The understanding will be discovered and shown viamathematical modeling of real world situations. An emphasis will be made to understand these newconcepts graphically, numerically, verbally, and algebraically. The course work will involve some fairlyintense computations and mathematical modeling, and it is required that students purchase or obtain anappropriate calculator.
A TI-83/84 Graphing calculator is highly recommended.Course Goals:
The motivating goal behind this course is to introduce the
basic theory 
and
concepts
of 
differential 
calculus. Upon the
successful completion
of the course, a student will have strongerquantitative reasoning skills and a student will have enhanced his or her problem solving techniques.
Atypical follow-up course is Math 020.
 
Method of Instruction:
Due to the class being fully on-line, much of the instruction duties fall on thestudent. However, I will go out of my way to ensure that you are keeping up with the materials. I will dothe following:
 
Post Detailed Section Notes, including worked out problems.
 
Post Brief Audio/Video Podcasts, highlighting some trickier problems.
 
Send Daily/Weekly Messages, reminding students of pending due-dates and dead-lines.
 
Be Available to meet with students for questions, either in-person at
my office on UVM’s Campus or
in a video-chat via the Free Utility Google+ Hangouts. 
 
Respond to any emails or questions within 24 hours.
 
In general, help you become a better mathematics student.
Note: On-Line classes are quite different than face-to-face classes; however, many students findthe method of instruction much more liberating, as it allows them to move at their own pace. Iwill have all materials available at the start of class to facilitate those students who prefer to workat a quicker pace. Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions.You can choose to work at the pace stated in the schedule shown below, but if you would like toproceed at a quicker or slower
pace, please feel free to do so. However, please don’t forgo an
understanding of the material by moving at too quick of a pace.Lastly, if you feel that you are becoming overwhelmed by the material, please do not hesitate tosend me an email, and I can work with you. Again, a majority of the effort in the class is put on
the student, so please don’t feel uncomfortable asking for help.
 
 
Grading:
The grading system is as follows:
 
MyMathLab HOMEWORK (25%)
---Following each section or sections covered, students must log onto the CourseCompass MyMathLab System and complete a companion HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTthat follows the material posted on-line. You will be given
several
attempts to answer eachquestion, and you
can
utilize the book and all of the aids offered within the CourseComass systemto help solve the problems. Each assignment should take roughly 30 minutes to complete, and youwill have several days to complete the assignments. All assignment grades will be equally weighted.
At the end of the semester, I will drop the lowest 3 HOMEWORK grades and average theremaining grades.
 
This average will count towards 25% of your final grade.
 
 
MyMathLab QUIZZES (25%)---
Following each section or sections covered, students must log on tothe CourseCompass MyMathLab System and complete a companion QUIZ that follows the materialposted on-line and the homework assignments. You will be given
TWO
attempts to answer eachquestion, and the student aids will
not
be available during the quiz.
There will be maximum timelimit on the quizzes, so once you open the quiz, you must complete it.
 All quiz grades will beequally weighted.
At the end of the semester, I will drop the lowest 3 QUIZ grades and averagethe remaining grades.
 
This average will count towards 25% of your final grade.
 
 
MyMathLab TESTS (50%)
---There will be
two
TESTS during the course. The breakdown of whatmaterial appears on which test is shown below.

Following the completion of the stated sections, students must log on to the CourseCompassMyMathLab System and complete a companion TEST that follows the material posted on-line,the homework assignments and the quizzes. You will be given
