Running Recovery for Seniors’
Many baby boomers start to run to keep fit-they usually like to continue it as they advance in years-whether it is with a group or by themselves, they do it to keep mobile and maintain a certain fitnesslevelEveryone attempts to do more than they need to-they push their limits because while physically we areageing and slowing down, mentally most of the time we still think we are capable of doing what weused to doThis mismatch in what we can do and what we think we can do may not be apparent until we do stretchthe limits-then we are hit with the effects of what we have done-in the case of running too far and toofast, this can show up by taking longer to recover
Running in a race can be divided up into 3 segments

The preparation hard work and training that has been put into getting to the start line

The race itself-turning up to the start line and running

The recovery period-after the finish lineAfter the fun of the run-now to get over it

Recovery
Many people have do-it-yourself systems for gaining fitness but they do not have do-it-yourselfrecovery systems to recover from the effort of maintaining it
The build-up to the run, was relatively easy you just followed the plan and trained and ran-there isplenty on the internet and in books on how to do this- but not too many people have a plan in place onhow to recover after the race has been run and wonIt is the recovery that has most runners mystified- the recovery afterwards can be harder than the runitself-after all the accolades and medallions have been presented and you turn up in the recovery areafor a turn on the massage table-and wait-and wait in line-and the soreness changes into stiffness so youcan hardly moveThe lucky ones got there first and have been worked on and gone home, or they have gone home tohave their understanding partner working on their sore stiff bits-otherwise it is home by yourself and jump into a hot bath which feels wonderful while you are in itBut then after sitting down to relax and trying to get up again-whoops! Can’t move!
First aid needed for leg muscles when they are fatigued
To assist the legs to recover when they are fatigued they need some form of first aid to empty thedepleted flood and lymph fluid out of the legs to make way for fresh blood to flood the muscle tissueswith oxygen*Just like the body needs help as soon as it is in distress to benefit from any first aid given- the legs willalso benefit if first aid can be applied as soon as practicableBecause it relies on gravity to do the work, the legs are just waiting for it to all happen for anunspecified period time that could be spent doing something else. The faster the legs receive help, the faster they recover but it is important they get it as soon as possiblebefore soreness and stiffness limits what can be done with them.
So how does the baby boomer (or senior runner) approach this problem?
Many seniors have legs problems such as varicose veins and other age related issues so they cant’ useconventional massage work on their muscles-it is too intrusive and can cause damage
