Dear Colleague, In recent years one can discern an increasing interest in basic research on historical formations and transformations of law and other expressions of normative thinking. Scholars from Social Science, Philosophy, History and Legal Studies are drawing heavily on the findings of legal-historical scholarship. There are ever more interdisciplinary research projects, and scholars from different parts of the world want to get better acquainted with the legal history of other legal cultures. This poses intellectual and institutional challenges for legal historical research. Not only new historical approaches, but also new formats of publishing, and different forms of qualification of early-stage researchers of legal history are required. The new Max Planck Summer Academy for Legal History seeks to meet some of these challenges. The academy addresses highly motivated early-stage researchers, usually PhD candidates, working on a research project with an interest in basic research on the historical formations and transformations of law and other normative orders. It provides an in-depth introduction to methods and principles of research in legal history.
