CWIT, PUNE Subject: POWER PLANT ENGINEERING
UNIT 3 : THERMAL AND HYDROELECTRIC POWER PLANTS

Q1. Explain with neat sketch working of a Modern thermal power plant andmention its

advantages and disadvantages.OR Q1.Draw a neat sketch of typical layout of thermal power plant and explainits working.
Steam is the most common working fluid used in steam/Thermal power plant because of its many desirable characteristics, such as low cost, availability andhigh enthalpy of vaporization.
The general arrangement and layout of basic elements of thermal power plant isshown below.
A thermal power plant can be roughly divided into three segments (1) thefurnace boiler and auxiliaries (2) The turbine which includes condensor, pump, feed water heaters and rejection system. (3) The electric generator.
Working:
Feed water flowing into the boiler is first preheated in the
economiser
, whichrecover the part or heat from the flue gases flowing to the chimney and thengoing to the atmosphere. This increases the efficiency as less heat must besupplied to the boiler.
The steam generated in the boiler may be wet or dry. It is superheated in the
superheater
who again takes the heat from the flue gases moving towards thechimney.
The superheated steam is supplied to the
turbine
which generated power.
In
condensor
the latent heat of vaporization of steam is transferred to thecirculating waste water supplied from
cooling tower.
The boiler
feed pump
raises the feed water pressure and sends water to boiler through high pressure feed water heaters.

Layout of thermal plant can be easily understood by dividing the plantcomponents into four circuits.
Coal and ash circuit.
Air and gas circuit.
Feed water and steam circuit.
Cooling water circuit.Figure : LAYOUT OF MODERN THERMAL POWER PLANT.

Coal and ash circuit:
Coal arrives at storage yard and after necessary handling it passes on to the furnacethrough fuel feeding system. In case of pulversing system, coal is pulverised andthen goes to the fuel burners. Ash resulting from combustion of coal gets collectedat the ash pit and is removed to ash storage yard by ash handling equipment.
