.The article mentions that this nightwas the anniversary of the canteen. Whichone? The rst? I don’t recall what yearthe canteen started. I do remember howfortunate we were to have folks like Mr. andMrs. Sorweide, Rollie’s parents, take on theresponsibility of managing the RedmondTeen Canteen. They were there at the IOOF hall everyFriday night to chaperone. We had some rules to follow. If Iremember right, we had to be fromRedmond and within a certain age rangeto attend. I think seventh through twelfthgrades. Redmond was a small enoughtown to know everyone, so there was nofooling the Sorweides if you were from a

neighboring town and tried to get in. We could bring guests. Most of uswere junior high age and our folks had to bring and pick us up. Therewas no going in and out either. I don’t recall any ruckus and everyonewas well-behaved.In this article Bucky writes that “the evening had been enjoyed byall until 10:30 when yours truly (Bucky) and
Darwn Rchardson
sort ofloused things up with some “ham” entertainment.” He didn’t mentionwhat they did.In the beginning the dances were held upstairs and then moved tothe rst oor. There were a couple of pool and ping pong tables, but Iremember only the boys playing pool and the girls dancing with eachother. Most of us gals had to wait until nineth grade to have a maledance partner as not many of the seventh and eighth grade boys weremuch into dancing.I don’t know when or why the canteen closed. I know it was therefor us kids during the ‘50s and provided great fun and entertainment. Itis too late now to thank the Sorweides for all they did for us kids. I justhope they knew how much we appreciated what they did for us.There isn’t anything that I know of in our archives about theRedmond Teen Canteen. Is there anyone out there with pictures and/ormemories to share with us? If so, let me know at
