ABOUT THIS REPORT
Scope and Method
This report forecasts US tobacco product consumption and shipments in US dollars atthe manufacturers’ level. In this report, the terms demand and consumption are usedinterchangeably. Total demand and shipments are segmented in terms of product by:
 cigarettes
 cigars
chewing tobacco and other products (eg, snus and pipe tobacco).Excluded from the scope of this report are tobacco-free products such as electroniccigarettes and electronic cigars.Total demand, shipments, and the various segments are sized at five-year intervals forhistorical years 2007 and 2012 with a forecast to 2017. Forecasts emanate from theidentification and analysis of pertinent statistical relationships and other historicaltrends/events as well as their expected progression/impact over the forecast period.Changes in quantities between reported years of a given total or segment are typicallyprovided in terms of five-year compound annual growth rates (CAGRs). For the sake ofbrevity, forecasts are generally stated in smoothed CAGR-based descriptions to theforecast year, such as “demand is projected to rise 3.2% annually through 2016.” Theresult of any particular year over that period, however, may exhibit volatility and departfrom a smoothed, long-term trend, as historical data typically illustrate.Key macroeconomic indicators are also provided at five-year intervals with CAGRs forthe years corresponding to other reported figures. Other various topics, includingprofiles of pertinent leading suppliers, are covered in this report. A full outline of reportitems by page is available in the Table of Contents.
