More than 40 people got very creative Jan. 24 in laying out their visions for what a cultural center could look like in Saline. The focus group gathered at the Stone Arch to dream, imagine and share ideas about the proposed center. A second focus group will meet 7 p.m. Feb. 5 at the former site of the Spotted Dog Winery on East Michigan. The citys Arts and Culture Committee came up with the idea to create an arts and cultural center after learning that top communities have an equally thriving arts community. Committee member Nancy Byers made the original presentation to the City Council in December. Organizers were ecstatic about the turnout that filled seven round tables. The twohour meeting produced more than 130 ideas scattered over 49 threads. The participants used magenta and yellow note pads, creating a mosaic. Among the attendees were Mayor Brian Marl and five council members, plus members of the Saline Main Street organization.

It truly was an incredible trip, said student Alex Kendig. We experienced lifestyles weve never come close to seeing here in the United States. The students and two teachers went on the school-sponsored trip to Haiti to work with Poured Out, a Michigan-based humanitarian organization formed to help areas affected by Hurricanes and now Haiti. The nation is still recovering from the effects of an earthquake several years ago which devastated its capital city, Port Au Prince. The group was inspired after listening to teacher Gail Trainor about her trip to Haiti with Poured Out. Trainors story sparked interest in going by the Capstone class, whose members wanted to install water filters in Haiti. The filter uses sand to produce up to 30 gallons a day of potable water. The need is great as much

Going to Haiti to install water filters may not sound like a typical holiday break, but for a group of Saline High School students it changed their lives. The impact was so great that they cant get the Caribbean nation out of their minds, or their hearts. In fact, they say Haiti is in

Several hundred empty clay bowls will serve as a stark reminder that the areas hungry need their empty bowls filled. Thats the message of the Saline Area Schools Empty Bowl Project, which is set from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Feb. 7 at the Saline High School Commons. The event is an annual fundraiser for Food

Gatherers, an Ann Arbor organization that serves as a clearinghouse for area food banks. The event has grown in popularity over the years with attendance expected to be about 600 this year, Chef Sam Musto said. The first year, Musto advised the high school principal to cut off attendance at 500, but no one listened and they nearly ran out of soup, he said. Musto leads the high schools culinary arts program and said his students

have been working hard making six different kinds of soups, homemade rolls and a dessert for this years event. To have the soup ready for the event, its made far ahead of time and frozen, he said. To offer a glimpse of the event, Musto served lobster bisque and rolls before a recent Board of Education meeting. The event raises funds through ticket sales and a silent auction of bowls
