13.1 Intro.
War of 1812 creates a surge in nationalism. Francis Scott Key writes The Defense of Ft. McHenry (the national anthem). What do you think becomes a part of the American identity? Pursuit of wealth became part of the American ID.

13.2 How Did We Develop a Nation in a Land of Differences?


America still a young country in early 1800s. Leaders hoped that fighting between political parties was a thing of the past.

How Did the U.S. Look in the Early 1800s?


Most Americans lived along the East Coast (New England), more and more were moving west (west of Appalachians, the western border). Regional lifestyles develop and stereotypes emerge. What were the stereotypes? North-enterprising and thrifty; South-gracious and cultured; West-hardy and rugged.

What Were the Symbols and Values?


To boost patriotism and unity, the gov. rebuilt the White House and the Capitol. Whos this guy? Uncle Sam invented after War of 1812. Americans prided themselves on Individualism and equality. Thought they were different and better than Europeans.

13.3 Politics: What Was the Era of Good Feelings?



What Was Economic Nationalism Strong sense of national unity: we can do it ourselves. Henry Clay: Believed U.S. future lay in capitalism (produce and distribute goods for profit). Promotes economic growth. American System: Called for 1. High tariffs and 2. gov. spending on projects (roads, canals etc.), and 3. a second National Bank. What was the purpose of high tariffs? Why transportation projects?

What Was Judicial Nationalism?


Chief Justice John Marshall made major decisions; had 2 impacts: 1. Strengthened power of the Court. 2. Encouraged capitalism. Decisions strengthened: federal power over state power; federal gov. to enforce contracts; power of Supreme Court to review cases.

How Did the Era of Good Feelings End?


Election of 1824: No candidate won a majority in electoral college. The House elected J.Q. Adams. Democratic Party emerges around Andrew Jackson--partisan politics was here to stay.

13.4 What Was Early American Art?



Who Were the American Artists? Folk art became popular (made by ordinary people). T. Cole painted the American landscape. J. Audobon b/c Americas first famous artist, painting portraits of American birds. G. Catlin painted the Native Americans. America had created its own form of art.

13.5 What Was Early American Music?


Most music was that which was heard in church. Slaves created spirituals (religious folk songs). Composers created minstrel songs, and minstrel shows b/c the most popular form of entertainment.

13.6 What Was Early American Literature?


First U.S. novelist was J. F. Cooper who wrote The Last of the Mohicans. Wrote about natives, frontiersmen, and wilderness. Davy Crockett told tall tales; wrote a famous autobiography that gave literature a new American accent. H. W. Longfellow: one of U.S.s first famous poets; Paul Reveres Ride, and Song of Hiawatha.
