foreword
Over the last couple of years the realities of massive generationalchange have dawned on many business leaders. While the issuesof an ageing population and a new attitude to work have literallybeen emerging for a generation, it has been a sudden awakeningfor many organisations. In fact dealing with these demographicchanges and specically recruiting, retaining and managingGeneration Y has emerged as one of the biggest issues facingemployers today. So in 2006 Mark McCrindle of McCrindle Research wascommissioned to conduct some groundbreaking research intoGeneration Y and their attitudes to work. Mark McCrindle isregarded as one of the Nation’s foremost social researchers and aleading authority on Australia’s changing generations. This whitepaper came as the result of the need for signicant originalresearch into Generation Y; both qualitative and quantitative. There is a lot written about Generation Y but much of it is mereobservation or opinion. Therefore McCrindle Research surveyed3000 Australians in all States and Territories and benchmarked thendings of Generation Y against the older generations. This wasfollowed up with a series of in-depth focus groups of Generation Y’swhich were moderated by Mark McCrindle and assessed againstongoing research. In addition this whitepaper has been referencedagainst the latest Australian Bureau of Statistics data making thisstudy one of the largest and certainly the most up to date analysisof Australia’s Generation Y.We believe that this complimentary whitepaper will be invaluablefor you in this critical endeavour, and at this time of great change.
