Mother Nature delivers for Winterfest

By Mary Struck Just a week before Kohlers Winterfest January 25-27, there was barely any snowcover and Wood Lake was mostly standing water. But Mother Nature stepped up to the plate just in time bringing a couple days of frigid temperatures followed by a slight warmup and gentle snowfall. Locals and visitors at Winterfest were treated to dog sled demonstrations and rides for the kids, ice skating demonstrations, ice golfing and bowling, snow sculptures, specials at the Shops at Woodlake, and more.

In order to construct the prominent list, an expert group of panelists play and score courses on seven criteria including: shot values, resistance to scoring, design variety, memorability, aesthetics, conditioning and ambience. To arrive at a courses final score, its averages are totaled in the seven categories, double-weighting shot values. A course needs 45 evaluations over the past eight years to be eligible for Americas 100 Greatest, and minimum 25 ballots for 100 Greatest Public Courses.

When Kohler High School students in Mr. DeBruins technology and engineering courses attend a Sheboygan As game this summer, they will probably be more interested in tailgating than RBIs. Thats because they, along with students from other Sheboygan County schools, will unveil their custom-made grill at what is being billed as the largest tailgate party in Sheboygan County. As part of Project GRILL, school teams paired with manufacturers are designing and building customized grills. GRILL (Growing Readiness in Learning & Leading) exposes students, teachers and parents to diverse manufacturing career opportunities in the county, perhaps cultivating a future workforce of homegrown talent. For this years

project, the Kohler Machine Design/Build team is mentoring the Kohler Engineering Club for the first time. The clubs nine-person design team visited the company in January to meet with the mentors and tour the engineering, maintenance and Machine Design/Build departments. The students ultimate objective is to create a marketable grill to sell as a fundraiser for their club. The program is a great way to get kids interested in engineering and to get them exposed to and involved in all the different aspects of it, said Luke Hanson, Millwright, adding that those skills include fabrication, skilled trades, project management, accounting and business. Hanson is teamed with Nick Eichmann, Supervisor Central Maintenance Design/Build, to mentor the students. Bob Wells,

General Supervisor Central Maintenance, is overseeing the project. Team members Tim Valicenti and Kyle Struck, both seniors, are interested in studying engineering in college. This program has allowed me to get hands-on exposure to engineering, and its also given me a little more confidence in knowing that engineering is definitely something I want to pursue, said Valicenti. Struck added, The best part is being able to directly apply things we are learning in other classes, like math. The learning goes both ways, according to Eichmann, who said, The whole mentorship program helps the kids, but at the same time allows us to better understand our own processes.

Business volunteers sought for JA Business Challenge

The 13th Annual ACUITY Junior Achievement Business Challenge will be held Saturday, March 2, 2013 from 8 a.m.-2:30 p.m. at ACUITY in Sheboygan. Open to all Sheboygan County high school students, the ACUITY JA-Business Challenge allows teams of local high school students, coached by business volunteers, to become CEOs for a day through a computer-simulated business strategy tournament. Students must make their own business decisions regarding product pricing, marketing strategies, inventory levels, and research and development investments. This event is free, but is limited to the first 48 teams. Winning teams will advance to the Junior Achievement of Wisconsin Statewide Business Challenge in April. Prizes and scholarship opportunities for participants. Volunteers are needed. No experience necessary and training is available. Kohler Highs MAD Club to host technology drive on February 12

Submitted by Andrew Grose Kohler High Schools Making a Difference (MAD) club will host a technology drive in the schools event lobby from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 12. Items that may be donated for recycling include: cell phones laptops/tablets/e-readers ink jet cartridges iPods digital/video cameras GPS devices Items may be in working or nonworking condition, and chargers do not need to be included. Items larger than laptops will not be accepted. The Kohler boys basketball team will be hosting Oostburg on the night of the drive. Students who bring an item will receive free admission to the basketball game; adults will receive half-price admission. The goals of MAD are to discuss world issues and to volunteer in the community in an effort to think globally and act locally. Discussion topics from the 2012-13 school year have included agricultural practices, composting, the effect of plastic water bottles on the environment, and the global impact of sweatshops. In November, MAD members took a field trip to Growing Power, an urban agriculture center in Milwaukee, in order to learn more about how people can practice sustainable agriculture. In addition to the discussion and enrichment that are exclusive to MAD, the clubs members have volunteered in many of the Key Club-sponsored events at Kohler High School. These include a school-wide ice cream fundraiser last September and the KSF Holiday Arts and Crafts Fair in November.

Kohler basketball alumni meet for twenty second time

The 22nd Annual Alumni Basketball game was held at the Kohler High School Gym on Saturday, December 29, 2012. Twenty-four alumni basketball players from the 1970s through 2012 were there, Special thanks go to Mike Zimmermann, Doug Bocchini, Peggy Zimmermann and Kyle Gebler for helping organize and run the event. Proceeds from the game go towards the Kohler School Basketball Program. On Saturday January 19th, Kohler Arsenal played in the Milwaukee Wave Youth Futsal (Indoor Soccer) Tournament at the US Cellular Arena. Kohler Arsenal is a collection of Kohler U12 Boys, seven of whom play for the Kohler Soccer Club in the Sheboygan Falls Y Recreation League and five of whom play for SC United. The tournament consisted of 12 teams including some of Wisconsins top Select Clubs. Kohler Arsenal had a tough round-robin path, but secured the 4th seed to make it into the semifinals against the Croatian Eagles. Kohler Arsenal prevailed 4-2 and made it to the Championship

match against North Shore United. Kohler Arsenal fought hard and won the Championship match 3-2! Kohler Arsenal stayed to watch the Milwaukee Wave game that evening and were invited to the center of the field at halftime to be recognized in front of a few thousand Wave fans as the U12 Tournament Champions. Kohler Foundation announces winners of Gingerbread Festival competition

The Kohler Foundation has announced the winners of the 16th annual Gingerbread Festival competition. This years overall highest vote-getter was Sheboygan North High School, under the direction of Connie Check. Mrs. Checks Family & Consumer Education students created a whimsical model of the house from the animated movie Up, being carried away by dozens of brightly colored helium balloons. During the month of December, gingerbread creations of all sizes and shapes were displayed at the historic Waelderhaus in Kohler and more than 6,500 visitors voted for their favorite designs. Entries are made in the manner of traditional gingerbread houses, requiring that all parts be edible. Candies, frosting, cookies, cereal, gum and sweets of all kinds were used to create mouth-watering gingerbread fantasies. This years entries included a Gingerbread Cupcake Inn; a European castle; an Arctic landscape; the White House; the Titanic; scenes from the stories of Humpty Dumpty, Little Miss Muffet and the Wizard of Oz; Finding Nemos underwater dwelling; The Dome House; the old woman who lived in the shoe, and many other imaginative gingerbread scenes decorated for the holidays. Prizes, based on tallied votes, were awarded in five age categories. Vacation Checks: Dont forget that if you are planning to go away on spring break or at any time during the year, that you may have the Kohler Police Department check your house while you are gone. Residents can now request a vacation check on-line through the Kohler Police Departments web page, by stopping by the department or calling. If you call outside of regular business hours you may leave a message too. In your message just include your name, address, duration of your vacation and any other pertinent information that we may need to know. Some pertinent information may include lights that are on timers, alarms, and names of persons that may stop by or keyholders. Any other questions about this service, please call the police department. Police Intern: The Kohler Police Department has a college intern again this year, Hannah Landgraf, who is in her last semester with Lakeland College. Hannah will be riding with the officers and assisting the police department throughout the Spring Semester. College interns that work for the police department are unpaid and earn college credits based upon the number of hours worked. The Postal Service will not deliver mail if the carrier is not able to reach the unit the front as well as the backside. Someone in the unit/neighborhood needs to take the initiative to remove the snow; or maybe the responsibility can be shared within the unit. The Village is not responsible to keep these areas clear of snow. REPORTING OF ILLICIT DISCHARGE: It is a requirement in the Village of Kohler Storm Water Permit with the DNR to educate the Public on illicit discharges to the storm water system. An illicit discharge would be the dumping of any chemical, pet waste, or hazardous substance into the street or a storm basin inlet. The substance would eventually make its way into the Sheboygan River causing a pollution hazard. To report an illicit discharge, please call the Public Works office at 4593881. Water/Sewer Utility ACH Available: The Village of Kohler Water and Sewer Utility is now able to accept ACH payments for your water and sewer utility bill. How does this work? Once you are signed up for direct payment, your utility payment will be automatically withdrawn from your bank account on the due date of the billing for the amount due. You will still receive a billing statement each quarter indicating the amount that will be withdrawn from your account and the date of the withdrawal. No checks to write, no postage, no late fees. Colin Fessler wins Kohler Schools National Geography Bee

By Duane Du Mez, National Geography Bee Coordinator Colin Fessler competed in the school level of the National Geography Bee on Wednesday, January 10. He competed against 9 other contestants 2 from each grade level in 4th thru 8th grade. Colin is a 5th grader and now moves one step closer to winning a $25,000 College Scholarship. The schoollevel Bee, at which students answered oral and written questions on geography, was the first round in the 23rd annual National Geography Bee, which is sponsored by Google. The kick-off for this years Bee was the week of November 12, with thousands of schools around the US, District of Columbia, and five U.S. territories participating. The school winners, including Colin, will now take a written test; up to 100 of the top scorers in each tional championship rounds on May 24, 2012. The first-place national winner will receive a $25,000 college scholarship, a lifetime membership in the Society, and a trip to the Galapagos Islands, courtesy of Lindblad Expeditions and National Geographic. Alex Trebeck, host of Jeopardy, will moderate the national finals, which will air on May 24. The program will air on television. Check local listings for dates and times. More than seventy girls between the ages of 6 and 14 who play basketball on a Kohler youth team, along with their coaches, were honored at half-time of the the Kohler Varsity Girls game against Sheboygan Christian on Friday, Jan. 11th. The event was held to recognize the girls' achievements on the basketball court, but also to acknowledge the positive influence of sports participation for girls.

Kohler School Board of Education Regular Meeting Minutes December 10, 2012
Call to Order Marlene Yang called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. in the Kohler District Conference Room. Roll Call was taken by Paula Anderson. The following board members were present: Marlene Yang, Matt Kautzer and John Suralik. Diane Kelly and Laura Kohler were absent. Statement of Public Notice December 7, 2012 Approval of Agenda John Suralik moved to approve the agenda. Matt Kautzer seconded the motion. All ayes. Board Presidents Report Marlene reminded everyone that the WASB convention is January 22-25th. Tony Wagner who wrote Closing the Global Achievement Gap is presenting on Wednesday. Superintendents Report There was a staff in-service on November 17. The strategic plan was clarified. Quynh thanked Marlene for speaking to staff on that day. The Kohler School Friends craft fair was held on November 18. It is obvious how the community supports our schools. The fair raised almost $22,000. Kohler School District hosted its first County Superintendents Meeting. Kohler High School is one of 5 schools in Wisconsin to be nominated for the National Blue Ribbon Schools Program. The National Blue Ribbon Schools Program recognizes schools where students perform at very high levels or where significant improvements are being made in students levels of academic achievement. The National Blue Ribbon Schools Program sets a standard of excellence for all schools striving for the highest level of achievement. It is an honor just to be nominated by the superintendent, Tony Evers, in the Exemplary High School Category. Quynh will ask all faculty and staff to help with the application due in February. The award recipients will be announced in September. Twenty new computers were set up in three different science labs. CHILDREN WITH DISABILITIES PROCEDURE The school district must locate, identify, and evaluate all children with disabilities, including children with disabilities attending private schools in the school district, regardless of the severity of their disabilities. The school district has a special education screening program to evaluate all children with suspected disabilities and are at least three years old. Upon request, the school district will screen a child who has not graduated high school to determine whether a special education referral is appropriate.
