On behalf of the Secretary and3the Department of Education and the Commissioners on4the future of higher education of America, I would5like to welcome you to this public hearing that we6have today.7My name is Rick Stephens. I'll be the8acting chair today and will be helping facilitate a9number of discussions.10 As many of you are aware in September the11Secretary of Education, Margaret Spellings, announced12the establishment of a National Dialogue about the13future of higher education in America. Its charge is14to ensure that America's system of higher education15remains the finest in the world and continues to meet16the needs of America's diverse population by expanding17opportunity, innovation, and economic growth.18Composed of approximately 2019representatives from both public and private sectors,20as well as a number of ex-officio members from the21Department of Education and other federal agencies,22the Commission is focused on addressing a number of23vital questions such as: How can we ensure that24college is affordable and accessible and how well our25institutions of higher education are preparing our26
