Education and TechEntrepreneurship
an assessment of U.s.-born techentrepreneUr demographics
Revealing new data about U.S.-born founders of technology andengineering companies
Following is a synopsis o a study that challenges the perception o American technologyentrepreneurs as being 20-something students rom elite universities. From a survey o652 U.S.-born chie executive ofcers rom 502 engineering and technology companiesestablished rom 1995 through 2005, this study reveals that today’s American techentrepreneurs are middle aged, well educated in business or technical disciplines, andhold degrees rom a wide assortment o universities. The study, published in May 2008,was unded by the Ewing Marion Kauman Foundation and conducted by researchers atHarvard University and Duke University.
Study highlights:
The average and median age o U.S.-born tech ounders was thirty-nine when theystarted their companies. Twice as many were older than fty as were younger thantwenty-fve.
The vast majority (92 percent) o ounders held bachelor’s degrees; 31 percent heldmaster’s degrees; and 10 percent had completed PhDs. Nearly hal o all thesedegrees were in science-, technology-, engineering-, and mathematics-relateddisciplines. One-third were in business, accounting, and fnance.
U.S.-born tech ounders holding MBA degrees established companies morequickly (thirteen years) than others. Those with PhDs waited twenty-one years tostart companies; other master’s degree holders took 14.7 years; and those withbachelor’s degrees took 16.7 years.
U.S.-born tech ounders holding computer science and inormation technologydegrees ounded companies sooner ater graduating than engineering degreeholders (14.3 years vs. 17.6 years). Applied science majors took the longest, attwenty years.
