3P-R-O-C-E-E-D-I-N-G-S1DR. FAULKNER: My microphone has a bell so2that I can get your attention. It's, I guess, a3technological virtual gathering, but let me welcome4the members of the panel and guests around the room to5this second gathering of the National Mathematics6Advisory Panel. We are here to do our work. And we7have nearly everyone who was expected to come. We've8lost Tom Luce to illness, and we've lost Dan Berch to9weather related travel. Tom Loveless is in town and10will be with us momentarily. I think that takes care11of everyone. We have some members who are not12expected to be here due to assignments, Nancy13Ichinaga, and Bob Siegler is by telephone. We're14missing three who could not make this date. We've had15two drop out, because of problems at the last minute,16but everyone else is here and, I think, we can go17ahead and pursue our goals.18We are in an open session, which will be19largely dedicated to discussing standards of evidence20methods. We'll get to that momentarily, but let me21begin this session by first of all, thanking the22University of North Carolina for allowing us to be on23campus and for providing us with the space that we'll24be using today and tomorrow. The University of North25Carolina is a premier institution of higher education26
