KuKluxKlanthugsequippedwithrifles,shotguns,pistols,knivesandriothelmetsstagedaracistshow
of
force
at
theFederalBuilding.TheKlansmen,exploitingextensiveTVcoverage,denouncedafederalhearingwhichwasconsideringawardinggrants
to
"improverelations"betweenthepoliceandtheblackcommunity.The

actionwasobviouslyarrangedwiththeconnivance
of
thecopswithwhomthefascistscheckedtheirgunsuponentering,pickingthemuponthewayout.Theappearance
of
Klanhoodlumsopenlyflauntingtheirweapons
on
thestreets
of
San
Franciscoonlyposesmoreurgentlytheneedfor
an
effectivelaborcounterattack.TheLocal6initiativewasundertakenasaresult
of
aresolutionbytheMilitantCaucus
ofthe
ILWUforamass
labor/black/Latino
mobilizationinNovemberfollowingtheGreensboromassacre.Butintheseveralweeksfollowingpassage
of
thismotiontheILWUtopssatontheirhands,leavingittotheMilitantCaucus
and
supporters
of
the"LongshoreMilitant"newsletterinLocal

topressthefight.Thesemilitantsandotheranti-racistscirculatedapetitionwhichreceived
500
signaturesfromunionmembersdemanding
that
theanti-Klanrallybeheld.However,theILWUbureaucracydoesnotwantamilitantdemonstration
of
thousands
of
workingpeople.Pressuredbystronganti-Klansentimentintheirownmembership,theuniontopsEddieHolland,president
of
ILWULocal

inSacramento,whoselocal,withtheurgingsofar
of
theInternational,continued
to
loadgrainboundfortheSovietUnion.
We
callontheInternational,whichhasindicated
that
ifdirectedbythegovernmenttheILWUmayembargoSovietgrain,tostandfirmandactuallyupholdthetradition
of
theILWU:thisunionfordecadesresistedpressuretoboycotttradewiththeUSSRbroughtbyright-wingandgovernmentforceswhenitsuitedtheiranti-communistmilitaristpurposes."SovietarmyagainsttheIslamiccounterrevolutionariesinAfghanistan.HepointedoutthesimilaritiesbetweenKhomeini'spolicies
and
those
of
theAfghanMuslimfeudalists,whohavebragged
about
killingpeopleforthe"crime"
of
teachingschool!Americanworkers,hesaid,havenointerestinsupportingawarin
Iran

awaragainsttheUSSR.After

minutes
of
debate,theInternationalbureaucracy'smotionforashippingboycott
of
Iranwasputtoavote.
It
carried,
but
onlyby
about
35
to20,withsome
70
abstentions
.
membersfromunionsrepresenting
another
30,000workers.Iftheseunionsdidnothaveofficialstatus,
it
wasthefault
of
theLocal6leaders.whodidnotnotifythem
of
themeeting!Many
of
thetradeunionistspresentheardaboutthemeetingonlythroughwordofmouth;thebroadattendancetestifiedtothewidespreaddesire
of
BayArealabortostoptheKlanandNazis.ActingasatransparentleftcoverfortheIL
WU
chiefsweresupporters
of
theCommunistParty(CP)suchas
Joe
Figueiredo.IntheplanningmeetingFigueiredobackedLeRoyKingateverycrucialjuncture,includingtheattempttoexcludesocialistorganizations.Andcertainlythe
CP
has

notimedistinguisheditselffromtheLocal6bureaucracy'spolicy
of
relying
on
thecapitalistpoliticians.Thusitsoughtunsuccessful
ly
tostoptheNazisinWalnutCreekbybeggingthecitycouncilto
ban
thefascistdemonstration.Similarly,FigueiredofavoredtheproposaltoinviteLionelWilsonasguestspeaker.DespitethedisruptivetacticspursuedbytheIL

theirStalinistlackeys,unionmilitantshavevowedtocontinuethefighttoorganizeagainsttheKlanthreat.

amilitantresponsetoanoutrageousprovocationagainsttheleftandlabormovements.Theprovocationmustnotgounanswered.OnlylastmonththeSecretServiceadmittedithadengagedinacampaigntodisruptInternationalAssociation
of
MachinistsdemonstrationsalongthecourseofCarter'ssummertimeMississippiriverboatcruise.TheMargolislawsuitcanbecomethefocalpoint
of
anefforttorepulseCarter'sviciousassaultonlabor.Theexpenses
of
suingthefederalgovernment,however,areenormous.AccordingtoUCASSH,legalfeesalone
in
theMargoliscaseareexpectedtoexceed$20,000thisyear.
It
is
afactofcapitalistclassjusticethatindividualsintheworkingclasscannotaffordthecostofpolice.ButtheOaklandPoliceOfficersAssociation(OPOA),determinedtoremainalawuntoitselfandopposed
to
anyreviewboardnomatterhowimpotent,stagedademonstrationofseveral
hundred·

OPOA
showofforce
at
cityhallwasademonstrationthateventheblackmayor
is
beingthreatened
by
thesekillercops.ThefrustratedangerofOakland'sblackpopulationwasclearlyapparent
at
theJanuary9meeting.Whenwhitecouncilmember
John
Sutterpresentedthefindingsofthemayor'staskforceandconcludedthatthe"consensusofourgroup
is
that
we
haveaverygoodpolicedepartment,"theaudienceansweredhimwithachorusofcatcallsandboos.Wilsonwasforcedtodeclareaten-minuterecesstorestoreorder.Butwhenthemeetingresumedtheexplosiveatmospherewasnotdispelled.Thecopsmanagedtofindablackpolicewoman,LyndaDrummer,whotestifiedthatcriticismofcopkillingshadcausedhertohesitateratherthanpullherpistolonasuspect.
As
aresult,sheclaimed,shehadbeenseverelybeaten.ThemoralofDrummer'sstory
was
thatto"bejudgedbyotherthanour
peers"-i.e.,
other
cops-was
athreattopolice
lives.
Thecrowdwasnotimpressedwiththecops'attempttoputonablackfaceandDrummerwasloudlybooed
as
sheleftthemicrophone.Leavingasidethepro-copspeeches,thepoliticaldebateduringthefour-anda-half-hourmeetingwasbetweentheadvocatesoftwoimpotentliberal
reforms-a
factthat
reflects
