Special Needs Shelter Models
Coconino County and Yuma County have developed special needs shelters to assist individualswith special needs who can not go to the Red Cross shelter during an evacuation.People with special needs are individuals who have a physical, cognitive, and/or sensorydisability, and/or medical care needs who, after exhausting all other resources (family,neighbors, etc.) still need assistance before, during, and after a disaster or emergency.
Coconino County Special Needs Shelter Plan
The Coconino County Health Department has a Special Needs Shelter Plan that is a part of alarger community-wide disaster plan and is an annex to the Coconino County HealthDepartment’s All Hazards Plan. The Special Needs Shelter Plan includes organizational rolesand responsibilities, tactical and support resources available, along with the scope and phasesof operations to execute the plan. The plan facilitates collaboration between communityagencies to provide shelters that are capable of providing safe refuge for individuals who requirethe supervision of a health care professional during the time of a disaster. The shelters serveindividuals with minor health, mental or medical conditions who require professional oversightand assistance but who do not require hospitalization. The Special Needs Shelter Plan includesinformation on:
