 A Tale Of Two Conference Seasons
 
For the first time during conference play, Washington (12-9, 4-4Pac-12) will have just one day off between games. The Huskieswelcome in Arizona State (17-4, 6-2 Pac-12) to Alaska Airlines Are-na on Saturday at 6:00 p.m. The Sun Devils are having their bestseason since 1980-81 when they were 19-2 through 21 games,while the Huskies have their most losses at this point of the sea-son since starting 11-9 during the 2008 campaign. Recent historyis on the Huskies side as they have won five straight over ASU and18 of the last 21 games.Saturday’s game will be carried on ESPNU

: 11-10avoid replicating on Saturday.• The 57 points UW allowed Arizona on Thursday were the fewestpoints allowed in a loss since No. 4 Washington State beat theHuskies 56-52 on Jan. 5, 2008.• The Huskies are trying to avoid being swept at home by Arizonaand Arizona State for the first time since Lorenzo Romar’s inauguralseason at UW in 2003.• The Huskies are giving up 66.1 ppg which ranks 9th overall amongleague teams but would be UW’s best mark since the 2000 teamallowed 65.1 ppg. The previous low watermark in Romar’s tenureis 69.5 in 2009.• UW is defintely getting more and more defensive in league play. They are allowing a Pac-12 best 63.8 ppg inconference action after ranking 10th in non-conference play giving up 67.6 ppg. UW also ranks tops in confer-ence play in 3-point FG pct defense (.222). AP (2/16/12) -Terrence Ross led four Washington players in double figures with 18 points, and the Huskiesstayed tied for first place in the Pac-12 with a 77-69 victory over Arizona State. Washington used a late runin the first half to take an 18-point lead at the break, and then coasted to its seventh win in the last eightgames. Carrick Felix led Arizona State with 13 points, but the Sun Devils lost for the fourth time in their lastfive. Washington remained tied with California for the Pac-12 lead heading to Washington’s final home gameof the season.

Now in his 11th season,
Lorenzo Romar
is coming off a year in which he won the 2012Pac-12 Coach of the Year after guiding UW to a 14-4 conference record and Pac-12regular season championship. It was the third time that Romar, the 18th head men’s bas-ketball coach at Washington, has earned Coach of the Year (also 2009 & 2005). Romaris the dean of coaching in the Pac-12 having spent more seasons at UW than any othercurrent coach at their school. Romar owns a

overall. Romar reached several milestones during theyear including

200th win as UW’s coach, 300th overall coaching victory & 100th Pac-12 conference win. The first African-American head basketball coach at UW, Romar is
 third all-time in victories at UW
and reached 200 wins second fastest. Washingtonhas won its first two outright conference titles (2012 & 2009) since 1953 under the direction of Romar. He hasled UW to six NCAA tournament Appearances -- all in spurts of three-consecutive seasons (2004-05-06 &2009-10-11) -- and the school’s first back-to-back Sweet 16 appearances (2005 & 06). Overall, he has led Wash-ington to three Sweet 16 appearances. In 2012 he led UW to the semifinals of the NIT, a first in UW history. Hewas the 2005 Pac-10 and Black Coaches Association Coach of the Year. Romar played point guard for MarvHarshman’s 1979 and 1980 teams and spent five years in the NBA after college. Prior to UW, Romar served asthe head coach at Saint Louis (1999-02) and Pepperdine (1996-99) and was an assistant coach at UCLA (1992-96) - He helped lead the Bruins to the 1995 national title. A native of Compton, Calif., he graduated from PiusX High School. Romar and his wife, Leona, have three daughters: Terra, Tavia and Taylor.

The Huskies are enjoying their greatest stretch of success in team history under the direction of Lorenzo Romar.Besides three Sweet 16 appearances, three Pac-10 tournament championships, two regular-season conferencetitles & a trip to the NIT semifinals, the numbers show Romar has entered unchartered territory. From 2004-2005 to 2011-12 the Huskies won 190 games, the most ever in a eight-year span of UW basketball history. Hehas avg 21.9 wins per season during his 10-year UW career and has amassed four of the seven largest single-season win totals in UW history. Romar earned his sixth 20-win season in 2012, including a school recordfour-consecutive seasons, and only trails Hec Edmundson’s 11 seasons with 20+ wins.
