Media Production Module: Story Assignment (Jan 2009)1
Compose a story, and write it down. Please include some words spoken, or thoughtsthought, by the characters (their words should be in quotes). Your story may be based on apersonal experience of yours, or of some other real person. It may be made-up. It mayinclude elements of a traditional story.
3D students --You might eventually use this story to make a 3D animation movie. However, this possibilitneed not occupy your thoughts very much at present.VFX students --You might eventually use this story to make a movie with visual effects, so it might be a good idea to include some opportunity for visual effects in the story. However, the possibility of making this story into a movie with visual effects need not occupy your thoughts very much a present.Game students --You might eventually use this story in the design of a computer-video game. However, this possibility need not occupy your thoughts very much at present.

Write about your story in terms of these Elements of Story--1) Characters.Decisions and follow-through by characters are essential aspects of stories. What,if any, important decisions do your central characters make? What, if anything,do your central characters want? Does she/he have a mission? If yes, whatobstacles does she/he face?2) Place.3) Time. (When does it take place? Continuous? Flashbacks?)4) Storyline -- in one sentence.Are there any twists in your story? A twist is a surprise. For example, a character may turn out to be someone other than what he/she first appeared to be. A twistmay also be something that
happens to
your central character.5) What, if any, are some important Colours, Smells, and Textures in the story?6) What are some of the leading Emotions in the story(for the teller, the characters, and the listeners)?7) Narrator’s Point of View.Is the story being told by a character in the story?Is it clear whom the intended audience might be?8) Narrator’s Tone of Voice, Attitude, Style. (Casual, formal, other?)9) What are some of the story’s Themes, Meanings, Morals, Messages?
