City of Trenton Achieves Sustainable Jersey Bronze Certification
 
Volunteers lead effort to green the capital city.
 
TRENTON, N.J. – The Trenton Green Team is pleased to announce that the City of Trenton has been awarded thebronze level of Certification from Sustainable Jersey. The certification was achieved by successfully earning 150points with a variety of actions and initiatives. The bronze certification is a first step in a long-term commitment tomake the City more sustainable in general, qualifying the City for future government and corporate financial support.Certification was achieved with the hard work of volunteer residents, non-profits, businesses, with support fromgovernment representatives. The city will be formally recognized at the Sustainable Jersey 2012 CertifiedCommunities and Award Winners’ Recognition Ceremony on Tuesday, January 29.Actions that contributed towards Trenton’s 2012 bronze certification include:
 
The City has a Childhood Lead Prevention Program in place to reduce lead levels in children, which helps toeducate residents with pamphlets targeted to areas with high instances of elevated lead levels.
 
The City passed a “Complete Streets” resolution as well as a Sustainable Land Use Pledge in 2012. A GreenDevelopment Checklist was also created to ensure that all new commercial and civic development isconsistent with the City’s desire to create a more sustainable community.
 
An asset map was created to highlight historic sites, art installations, murals, civic groups, parks, churches,non-profits, and local businesses. The map will eventually be hosted on the city’s website.
 
A “Buy Local” program sponsored by the Trenton Downtown Association (TDA) which seeks to promote andsupport local restaurants and businesses.
 
The “Capital City Farmer’s Market” sponsored by the TDA helps to support local farms and businesses with aweekly market in Downtown Trenton.
 
The Trenton Climate Action Plan created a baseline carbon footprint for the municipality as well as for thecommunity. This baseline will be used to set future energy reduction goals.
 
Multiple community and school gardens help to produce urban produce and have helped to transformblighted and abandoned properties into revitalized centers within the community.
 
The New Jersey Partnership for Healthy Kids has been involved in designing and implementing childhoodobesity prevention strategies that support access to affordable healthy foods and increase opportunities forsafe physical activities."I am just an average citizen who has a passion to see my community achieve greatness and the green team hasgiven me an opportunity to get involved and make a difference," said Shanique Taliaferro.“The Trenton Green Team is proud of the certification by Sustainable Jersey, and looks forward to additionalinitiatives, meaningful change, and a more sustainable City for all Trenton residents, “ said Stephen Doyle, member of the Trenton Green Team and Trenton planning board."Environmentally, we're all connected in the City of Trenton; this bronze certification is a great thing," said LindaHollingshead, Gardener and Trenton Green Team member.“Achieving Sustainable Jersey certification is laudable, but there are plenty of action steps yet to be taken and theeffort to make Trenton more sustainable will require concerted effort from leadership, and the community,” said DanFatton, Trenton Green Team member.
