Welcome to the NHC!
The National Havurah Committee(NHC) is a network o diverse indi-viduals and communities dedicat-ed to Jewish living and learning, community building, and
tikkunolam
(repairing the world). 2008is the NHC’s 30
th
year o bringingtogether Jews across North Amer-ica to envision a joyul grassrootsJudaism and providing the toolsto help them create empoweredJewish lives and communities. TheNHC is a nondenominational, multigenerational, egalitarian, and volunteer-run organization. The NHC’s agship program, the week-long Summer Institute, is a unique op-portunity or serious study, moving prayer, spirited conversation, late-night jam sessions, singing, dancing, swimming, meditation, and hiking – all in thecompany o more than 300 people rom a wide range o backgrounds. Eachyear, participants leave the Institute reinvigorated and excited to return totheir home communities to share new ideas, skills, and experiences. Our 2008 theme is
Baruch She-amar v’Hayah Ha-Olam / Blessed Is The OneWho Spoke the World Into Being
. This phrase, rom the morning liturgy, resonates with our overall interest in turning speech into action and learninginto doing, connecting Torah with social and environmental justice. It evokescreation themes, both ecologically and spiritually, and invites us to spend theweek o the Institute exploring the worlds we can create with our words. At the Institute, every teacher is also a student and every student is a teacher.People who are usually called “rabbi” or “proessor” throughout the year goby their frst names here. And people who rarely take active leadership rolesin their communities discover that they, too, can teach and contribute to thecommunity. We look orward to creating community with you at this year’s SummerInstitute!
Our Community
One o the NHC’s greatest strengths is the diversity o its participants. We aremusicians, doctors, students, urniture makers, retirees, Jewish proessionals, homemakers, teachers, activists, and just about everything else. At the 2007Summer Institute, the youngest participant was a newborn, and our oldestwas over 80, with many participants rom all age groups in between. TheNHC includes Jews rom birth, Jews by choice, people committed to both tra-ditional and non-traditional Jewish practice, non-Jews, and people exploringJudaism. NHC participants have a variety o identities including: LGBTQ andstraight; people o color, Sephardi, Mizrachi, and Ashkenazi; urban, rural, and suburban; Conservative, Orthodox, Reconstructionist, Reorm, Renewal, secular, and Jewish without labels. NHC participants also have a variety oJewish learning backgrounds rom those with no ormal Jewish education tothose with Ph.D.s in Talmud. The dynamic process o exploring together whatJudaism and Jewishness means in our lives is a highlight o the Institute.
