PCA agility report 2006
Once again the PCA agility exhibitors enjoyed show-ing in the ideal conditions of a clear span ring, onsod and with theluxury of air condi-tioning. The run totalwas down slightlythis year, but at 256entries it was still thesecond largest entryin the history of PCAagility. Our judge, ChrisDewey from Florida, gave us some funcourses and seemedto be having asmuch fun judging aswe were running.Because of all of thewonderful Poodle people that volunteer from all over the U.S. our trial day ran quickly and smoothly. Iwould never dare name them all individually, I wouldbe sure to leave someone out. Thanks to the “Unique” group of people that helpedset up the ring on Sunday afternoon we were readyto start as soon as possible on Monday morning. We had a wonderful group of course builders thatwere brave enough to take on the task although mosthad never met until the morning of the trial. Buildingcourses quickly and correctly generally takes a teamthat has had a great deal of practice. This group jumped right in and did an excellent job of communi-cating with each other and moving all that equip-ment around to the right places. The gate stewards acted more like Border Colliesthan Poodles andkept the exhibitorsinformed about therun order and whowas next on line sowe could progressthrough theclasses in goodtime. The table crewworked hard to getout the scribesheets to the ex-hibitors quickly andtabulate the scoresfor the judge to check.Every person that carried equipment, straighteneda chute, ran leashes, timed, scribed or bar sethelped make the day run faster and smoother andthey all did it with a smile. At one point I was foolishenough to make an announcement that I needed afew more people to ring crew a class. I was nearlystampeded with volunteers and was happy I wasstanding behind a table for protection! It takes 50plus people to put on a one day, one ring trial likeours. Thank you to everyone that worked so hardto make our trial the special trial it is. A few years ago, at the request of the exhibitors,we added a High In Trial award to the PCA agilitytrial. Our efficient Trial Secretary, Kathryn Foran, devised a system to determine what dog and han-dler team were the top team of the day. The teamthat wins HIT is from the Standard classes, includ-ing Preferred, that has a qualifying run and the great-est percentageunder standardcourse time for their height di-vision andclass. Thisyear we weredelighted toaward it toLinda Morrisand her speedy Minia-ture Ch. Bevanton Just Do It UD RE, better knownas Shannon. This team not only burned up thecourse with an amazing 38% under SCT but it wastheir first leg in Novice A as well!I think it is interesting to note that of all the Poodlesentered, of all three varieties, almost a quarter werebreed Champions. Of the rest, by far the majorityhad Champion parents. It is a credit to the breed-ers that are producing Poodles that finish in thebreed ring and then go on to train and compete in ademanding sport like agility. It says a lot that theyare breeding puppies from these Champions thatare mentally and physically sound as well. It is alsoa credit to the judges that they are putting up thesedogs. Many of us love agility almost as much as welove Poodles, and we are lucky indeed that our breeders and judges are such excellent stewardsof our breed. If you missed coming to the trial this year, or missedcoming to PCA at all, I hope you make an effort to join us in 2007. It is great fun!
