 WINTER2013
...where lifelong learning and the community come together

Welcome

to

David
sonLearns!Thank

you

for

your

interest,

and

for

your

participation,

in

lifelong

learning

in

your

commu
nity.

It

matters.

To

paraphrase

Oliver

Wendell

Holmes,

"One's

mind,

once

stretched

by

a

new

idea,

never

regains

its

original

dimensions."

This

notion

is

what

drives

my

pas
sion

for

learning,

and

I

am

honored

to

be

part

of

an

or
ganization

that

values

it

so

deeply.

I

never

cease

to

be

amazed

by

the

variety

and

depth

of

experience

represented

by

our

friends

and

neighbors.

Just

look

at

a

sample

of

our

early

course

offerings:

Litera
ture.

Writing.

Art

History.

The

Organ.

Political

Sci
ence.

Archeology.

And

this

doesn't

even

begin

to

scratch

the

surface.

In

addition

to

the

wealth

of

expertise

that

comes

from

being

the

home

of

a

world

class

college,

we

have

among

us

 journalists,

entrepreneurs,

musicians,

architects,

teachers,

design
ers,

an

award

winning

theatre

and

radio

station.

Our

churches

offer

extraordi
nary

spiritual

and

musical

programming.

We

are

civic

minded.

The

list

goes

on.

It

is

a

blessing

to

live

in

a

commu
nity

with

such

talent.

So,

what

to

do

with

all

of

this?

Share

it,

of

course!

This

is

what

DavidsonLearns

is

all

about

 –

our

neighbors

(writ

large)

sharing

what

they

do

in

a

context

that

is

intel
lectually

stimulating

and

ac
cessible,

while

remaining

comfortable

for

those

of

us

who

would

rather

not

have

to

take

a

final

exam

and

for

those

of

us

who

like

to

sea
son

our

Aristotle

with

a

little

fun.

All

you

need

to

be

is

curi
ous!

We

welcome

you!

Amy Diamond, Executive Director Joey Schnople, Board Chair
I

have

my

vision

for

what

a

lifelong

learning

institute

s h o u l d

look

like.

I

can

imag
ine

partnerships

with

local

organizations

and

arts

groups.

But

I

want

to

know

your

vision

and

your

dreams.

What

classes

would

you

like

to

take?

Where

would

you

like

to

see

us

grow?

How

can

we

best

meet

your

needs

for

lifelong

learning?

I

want

to

hear

from

you

to

help

us

plan

for

the

future.

Please

 join

us

in

this

excit
ing

 journey!

It

is

an

honor

to

serve

as

the

Executive

Director

of

DavidsonLearns

and

to

wel
come

you

to

our

first

news
letter.

My

participation

with

DavidsonLearns

is

the

coming

together

of

many

parts

of

my

life

and

many

interests.

For

me

,

it

really

is

the

intersec
tion

of

lifelong

learning

and

the

community.

I

have

been

involved

with

education

since

I

received

my

graduate

degree

from

Bank

Street

College

of

Education.

I

moved

from

pre
school

to

elementary

to

middle

and

now

to

adults!

Our

area

is

rich

in

re
sources

but

one

of

the

most

obvious

is

our

intellectual

capital.

We

have

citizens

who

are

curious

and

willing

to

push

themselves

to

learn

new

things.

We

also

have

many

residents

who

are

will
ing

to

share

their

areas

of

interest.

When

the

enthusi
asm

of

the

participants

meets

the

expertise

of

the

instruc
tors,

wonderful

things

hap
pen!

It

is

the

learning

in

a

community

that

provides

additional

richness

and

depth

to

the

experience.

We

launched

David
sonLearns

with

three

classes.

The

response

was

enthusias
tic

and

positive,

with

over

50

participants.

They

spanned

many

generations

and

came

from

several

towns

in

the

North

Mecklenburg/Iredell

area.

In

this,

our

inaugural

newsletter,

you

will

find

first

hand

ac
counts

from

our

Ex
ecutive

Director,

our

Board

Chair,

a

class

teacher,

and

a

class

participant.

They

best

tell

the

story

of

DavidsonLearns.

We

dedicate

this

newsletter

and

the

work

of

our

organi
zation

to

Bill

Tie
mann.

He

is

the

per
son

who

was

deter
mined

that

Davidson

and

the

region

would

have,

at

last,

a

lifelong

learning

or
ganization

to

bring

people

who

wish

to

learn

together

with

people

who

are

well
equipped

to

teach!

Without

Bill’s

vision

and

determination,

DavidsonLearns

would

not

exist.

We

hope

you

will

find

a

class

that

piques

your

curiosity

and

 join

our

lifelong

learning

community!

Please

look

on

our

website

for

lots

more

information

about

classes.
