DAN RIVERA TO ANNOUNCE HIS CANDIDACY FOR MAYOR OF LAWRENCE

- Lawrence City Councilor at Large Dan Rivera will officially announce his candidacy for Mayor today at 4:30 pm at the Everett Mill. “I’m running because the current leadership has failed us andwe must change it. Our campaign offers a clear choice between hope and fear, between professionalismand incompetence, between success and failure” said Rivera. “I am running because people in this citywork hard every day to make Lawrence a home and a place to do business, and we need a Mayor that cansupport them by making it safe and by bringing jobs and industry to Lawrence.”The announcement will take place at the historic Everett Mill, site of the 1912 Bread and Roses Strike. Thebuilding has particular significance for Rivera, who came to Lawrence as a young boy with his mother, aDominican immigrant who worked in the city’s mills. “We live in a community that has been the living andbreathing definition of hope for generations. Lawrence is a place where people have come from all over theworld to transform their lives. I know it to be true because it is my own story” said Rivera. “I am aLawrence kid. I grew up on her streets and went to her schools. My mother came from Dominican Republicand worked in the factories.
I love Lawrence and that is why I have made a life here. But at this moment,our city is in a critical place in its history. The sense of optimism and hope that this community instilled inme and countless others has been overtaken by hopelessness, selfishness, incompetence and arrogance.This is not who we are.”Dan Rivera has been a leader and a public servant since high school, where he was a Boy Scout, a U.S.Air Force Auxiliary Civil Air Patrol Cadet, newspaper delivery boy for the Eagle Tribune, Co-chair of ModelUnited Nations, and Senior Class Secretary at Lawrence High School. After high school, Dan served hiscountry as a Military Police officer in Germany where he was deployed to Iraq and Kuwait duringOperations Desert Storm and Desert Shield. “Dan has the character and integrity we need to lead this City.It has been an honor to serve on the Council with him, and I believe he can put Lawrence back on the pathto progress and prosperity” said Kendrys Vasquez, the District C Councilor and a member of the StateDemocratic Committee.Dan Rivera has chaired the Budget and Finance Committee since his joined the Lawrence City Council in2010, and he was elected Vice President of the Council in January 2012.
