Although it is time for all of us to prepare our income taxes, unfortunately, we still do not have anyfederal forms. According to the Internal RevenueService, “Following the January tax law changes made by Congress under the American Taxpayer Relief Act,the IRS announced it plans to open the 2013 filingseason and begin processing individual income taxreturn on January 30.” This means we will not receiveforms until the middle of February. However, you’rewelcome to continue to call us at 774

As we come in to the beginning of a new year, Iwould like to take this opportunity to introduce the newFriends of the Ozark Dale County Library Committee.Officers for 2013 are Kathy Kalina, Vice
President;Jennifer Whitman, Secretary; Elaine Potts, Treasurer;and myself Mo Armstrong, President.
On that note I would like to thank the outgoingPresident, Elizabeth Babine, for all the hard work shehas done for the last two years. Under her leadership, there were many great programs presented that enabledthe community to take part in a variety of libraryactivities. These programs allowed the community theopportunity to get involved and gain a better understanding of what the Friends of the Library do for the community as a whole. The Book Sale programsreturned $14,145.51 to the library for various projects.
Mack M. Matthews School
Jocelyn Ross
In 1965, the Alabama House of Representatives passed Joint House Resolution No 177, a resolutioninitiated by Mr. Steagall, proposing that the name of theschool in Pinkard, Alabama, be changed from “PinkardColored School” to the “Mack M. Matthews School.”The resolution passed. However, in 1971, the nameMack M. Matthews School was removed, and the DaleCounty School Board renamed the school, the “SouthDale Middle School.”Eventually, Dale County’s officials acknowledgedthat black men of exceptional ability and dedicationwho worked hard as teachers “during very turbulenttimes in our state and country” should be honored for their significant contributions. Thus, the Dale CountySchool Board agreed that the school in Pinkard should be changed back to the name Mack M. MatthewsSchool.
On June 28
2011 this historic school was listed onthe Alabama Register of Landmarks and HistoricalPlaces. The school that was once named South DaleMiddle School was officially re
named by the State of Alabama as the Mack M. Matthews School. It wasgiven the name of an African
American educator, Mack M. Matthews. This was to acknowledge Mr. Matthews’contributions in the field of educating the children of Dale County. It was the committee that formed “tocommemorate” Mack M. Matthews’ educationalcontributions to the community of Dale County byrestoring the Mack M. Matthews name, that also listedthis school on the Alabama Historic Register. Thiscommittee, whose aim is to improve Dale County byworking to spotlight Dale County’s historic sites, isheaded by Gene Lynn. The committee may becontacted at 334
