INTRODUCTION
Tuberculosis (TB), chronic or acute bacterial infection thatprimarily attacks the lungs, but can affect the kidneys,bones, lymph nodes, and brain. The disease is caused by
Mycobacterium tuberculosis,
a rod-shaped bacterium.Children and people with weakened immune systems are themost susceptible to TB. Half of all untreated TB cases arefatal.In 1993 the World Health Organization (WHO) declaredTB to be a global emergency. According to WHO, oneindividual becomes infected with TB every second, andevery year over 8 million eole contract the disease.
