Executive Chairman’s Statement
Proessor Klaus Schwab, Founder and Executive Chairman o the World Economic Forum
In today’s increasingly interconnected andcomplex world, no single leader, nation ororganization has the solution to the crucialissues that ace us all. Climate change, terrorism,or water scarcity, all require a coordinatedapproach, one in which dierent stakeholderscollaborate across geographical, industrial, political and cultural boundaries.
2007-2008 was again a very successul year, maybeour most successul ever. We delivered on ourpromises to our partners, members and constituents,we expanded well into Asia, and we played a catalyticrole in many global developments. In our initiatives,in our communities and in our own organizationaldesign, we were more innovative than ever beore. However, while I am proud, I am not ully satised. The 34% increase in the number o StrategicPartners, 37% increase in the number o IndustryPartnerships, as well as nearly 20% growth inrevenues, are powerul demonstrations o the trustour communities install in us. But what pleased methe most was the superb degree o engagement o our Strategic Partners and Industry Partners in ourdierent initiatives, and their demonstratedcommitment to our mission to improve the state o the world. It is this engagement and commitmentwhich makes the Forum so eective and so powerul. This report will enumerate many activities whichdemonstrate the sense o true corporate globalcitizenship. A great achievement in this sensewas working together with over 100 CEOs, manygovernments and the most relevant researchorganizations to submit to the G8 on the occasiono its summit in Hokkaido the most comprehensiveaction plan to reduce carbon emissions based ongovernment-business cooperation. In 2007-2008, we broadened our engagement withthe establishment o our Community o Global GrowthCompanies. These ast-growing businesses, manybased in emerging economies, are set to be leadingmultinationals within a decade. The rst AnnualMeeting o the New Champions − or “SummerDavos” − in Dalian, People’s Republic o China, brought together our rst GGC members, alongwith Technology Pioneers, Young Global Leadersand the leaders o ast-growing regions and cities. In pursuit o our mission to improve the stateo the world, the Forum continues to work veryclosely with governments around the globe. Thispartnership was again demonstrated at our eventsby such distinguished participants as US PresidentGeorge W. Bush, British Prime Minister GordonBrown, Mexican President Felipe Calderón.Japanese Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda, RussianPresident Dmitry Medvedev and Chinese PremierWen Jiabao. The World Economic Forum has the ambitionto be always ahead o its time. This year welaid the oundations or two new major creativebreakthroughs, WELCOM (World Economic LeadersCommunity) and the Global Agenda Councils (GACs).WELCOM is a powerul new online communicationand collaboration space designed specically orthe world’s top decision-makers. It will be rolledout throughout next year, providing global leaderswith an unprecedented opportunity o continuous, instantaneous interaction. Making WELCOMpossible is the result o a close partnershipbetween the world’s top technology leadersand the World Economic Forum. It is not sucient to strengthen interaction amongour communities through a combination o ace-to-ace and virtual contacts. This interaction shouldbe based on the best strategic insights and shouldalways be orward looking. For this reason, webuilt on our knowledge o global expertise andwith the help o the world’s leading universities weestablished a network o Global Agenda Councils(GACs) which constitute now over 1,000 members, the world’s oremost integrated collectiveintelligence system. In November 2008, the Councils will gather inDubai or the rst Summit on the Global Agenda.Participants will identiy the most pressing andprevailing global challenges and consider long-termsolutions in a systematic and collaborative manner. Their conclusions will eed into the programme o the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting 2009and, indeed, all o the Forum’s work. These two major breakthroughs (WELCOM andGlobal Agenda Councils) will allow us not only toimprove our traditional activities but also to developcompletely new services or our partners, membersand constituents. The next year, 2008-2009, willallow us to show our communities the benetso all those eorts.
