Concert ReviewJason CrewsBrass StudioI attended a small jazz performance by Fred Forney in Fountain Hills. Hewas accompanied by one guitar player and a bass player, and performed twoseparate sets consisting of several different and original songs in each set.This was one of the few live jazz performance I have ever attended andwas and interesting experience. Most of my training and musical experience hasrevolved around classical music. The performance was somewhat like attendinga concert spoken in a different language. At first I really had no idea what wasgoing on, and didn’t know how to react.Sense I don’t know much about jazz it’s difficult to describe what I waslistening to, but the first set consisted of several different songs that I had adifficult time deciphering a melody, theme and at some points, a pulse. Thesongs seemed to be some sort of free flowing notes not linked together by anytheme that I could detect. I did however notice that many of the moreexperienced people in the genre did seem to be enjoying the songs quite a bit.Perhaps continued study of the music will allow me to further appreciate thesetypes of songs.The second set was much more palatable to my tastes. The songs were alot less “free” and a melody, theme, and pulse. While most of the tunes were stilloriginals, I found myself tapping my foot along with the rest of the crows. It wasduring this set that Fred displayed some of the talent he is known for among themusic and jazz community. I was impressed and even amazed to hear and see
