Approach Anxiety
We’ve all been there. You’re out at the bar, maybe a party, at a friend’s gathering, or atthe mall when you see a gorgeous girl. She’s totally hot and you’d love to take a girl likethat out on a date. For a fleeting moment you think about talking to her. But just as fastas the thought to talk to her crosses your mind, something inside you grabs you andholds you back. Your palms get cold and slightly sweaty, your heart rate quickens, andthoughts race through your head. Your desire is to talk to her is very strong and so isthe desire to not approach her! At the end of the day or night, you go home thinkingabout that girl. You think to yourself “What if?” What if you had approached her?Maybe she would have really liked you, the two of you would have hit it off, and you’dbe going on a date with her this Friday night. What if?Anxiety. What is this sudden and gripping emotion that paralyzes us and keeps us fromapproaching the beautiful girls with whom we’d like to talk? Anxiety is a reaction tostress. It occurs when the fear of danger or misfortune is present and results in themind becoming distressed and uneasy. The physical effects include an elevation inblood pressure and heart rate, increased sweating (sweaty palms, arm pits, etc), anincreased flow of blood to your major muscles, a tightening of your muscles, accelerated and deepened respiration, and energy is pulled away from your immuneand digestive system as your body prepares to fight or take flight. Essentially, anxietyoccurs in response to a perceivedthreat. So you can either karate kick thatgorgeous blonde or not approach her at all. As ridiculous as this sounds, this is the physiological andpsychological response that your body is genetically programmed tobring forth. Yes, your own geneticcode is programmed to make youwant to escape and/or avoid thesituation of approaching a woman. Our own genetic code is the result of millions of years of evolution. Thebehavioral responses we have todaywere selected for us millions of yearsago. And because evolution is not afast process, humans today are stuckwith genetically preprogrammedresponses that are no longer adaptivefor today’s world.
