CHAPTER CHATTER

Hello my fellow Phi Theta Kappans!
This is an exciting time for Iota Xi. Now that our hallmarks have been completed, we can focus onsetting new goals for our chapter. Our calendar for spring is densely packed with events, and manyopportunities for current and new member in-volvement.I encourage you to take the initiative in distin-guishing yourself this semester. We greatly appre-ciate all of your help! Make sure you visit our members website at
PTKIotaXi.org
and get up todate on Iota Xi chapter events, happenings, andfundraisers. Interact with other members, sign upfor Iota Xi text alerts, add your email address tothe chapter mailing list, and subscribe to
Chapter Chatter
, Iota Xi’s newsletter.Iota Xi will also soon be sending members tothe 2009 Regional and International Conventions.I’m really looking forward to the 2009 Interna-tional conven-tion in Texasthis April. Newsweek editor FareedZakaria will be delivering the keynote address. Iexpect that Professor Stokes, Megan, and I willcome back with some good stories from the LoneStar State. Also, if you are planning to transfer soon, I’dlike to offer a friendly reminder to get a jump-starton your transfer scholarship search. I’m goingthrough this process right now and it is slightly mad-dening.When I did my FAFSA this weekend, it took mehours to wade through aquagmireof W-2sand taxreturns. Anumber of colleges require notonly the FAFSA, butsupplemental materialsas well, so be sure togive yourself plenty of time.

Valentine’s Day
Chris Mauro, VP of Fundraising
February 12th is the start of the fundraising season for thissemester. We are always looking for volun-teers. This semester, we will have a bake sale, book sale, and an e-cycling drive, which is new.TheValentine's Bakesale is an excellentopportunity to help Phi Theta Kappa, work with other mem-bers, and meet students who stop at the table. I look forwardto seeing everyone there. The book sale, our main fundraiser, will be set up February22nd starting at 7:00 a.m. but will officially begin February23rd and will last for one week. We will begin a sign upsheet on February 12th.Finally, we have the e-cycling event comingup. We will be collecting old and/or unused cellphones and giving them to a company that has a"No Dump" policy, which is a concern for all recy-clers. This will begin in the near future and if youwould like the opportunity to help promote and market theevent, please contact me at
fundraising@PTKIotaXi.org.
Thank you!
BY MEGAN ANDRADE, VP OF FELLOWSHIP
Phi Theta Kappa is more than just anhonor society. It is an opportunity tomeet great and interesting people whovery quickly become your friends.
What has Phi Theta Kappa done for me?
Phi Theta Kappa has helped medevelop my leadership and publicspeaking skills, and I have learnedmore about team work and how tointeract in a more productive way withothers.
Phi Theta Kappa changed my life!
Before I joined Phi Theta Kappa, Ididn’t know half of what I know nowabout different cultures, how to ap-proach people with social problems, and most importantly how to appreci-ate what I have. I have also noticedthat after joining the chapter my self esteem has improved a great deal.
The benefits I get from Phi ThetaKappa are many!
Besides learning somuch from other Iota Xi members andfrom members of different chaptersthat come to our meetings and work-shops, I also have the opportunity of receiving scholarships when I transfer to a four-year school. So far I havebeen to two admission interviews andone of the first questions I’ve beenasked is “
Are you a Phi Theta Kappamember?”
So, if you are looking for new experiences and a chance to earna scholarship, Phi Theta Kappa is for you!
Ivan Morocho, CommitteeLeader
A major part of my duties ismembership, which begins at thebeginning of each semester. So,you can just imagine how hectic thestart of this semester is already! At the beginning of the semester,we send out letters to eligiblepotential members, that is, studentswith a 3.6 cumulative GPA, twelveUCC credits, and are enrolled full-time. This semester, we mailed out340 letters to students who metIota Xi’s membership requirements.Spring 2009 new member orienta-tion sessions will be held on Thurs-day February 12th, and SaturdayFebruary 14th.Forty-five potential inducteeshave responded so far! After orien-tation, prospective members havea one-on-one interview with FacultyAdvisor, Professor Stokes-Dupass,and then new members are in-

ducted during an elaborate InductionCeremony. This semester, the Induction will beon March 6th in the Cranford Cam-pus Commons. We always have agood turn out and it always looksnice thanks to the help of my fellowofficers. For this Induction, we havethe pleasure of having an Iota XiAlumni (former president to beexact), Philip Martin, joining us and mak-ing a short speech. It’s tradition after our InductionCeremony to have an Honors Lunch-eon the following afternoon. This is asort of welcome for new membersand a time for new and old membersto mingle. Also, we usually have aspeaker or presentation on our Honors Topic, which is
The Paradox of Affluence; Choices, Challenges, and Consequences.
We have thehonor of having Dr. Jeff Shalan, thecoordinator of Union County Col-lege’s Honors Studies Program, speaking at Honors Luncheon thissemester, which I am very excited tohear.Officers of Iota Xi dedicate their time and culinary skills in order tomake this an enjoyableexperience for every-one. We also invitemembers from other chapters to join us. So,as you can see, I’vebeen busy, and I will continue to bebusy until after the Luncheon. How-ever, I enjoy the planning, and theoutcome always makes it worthwhile!See you at the Induction and theLuncheon.

RELAY FOR LIFE :
MAY 29TH STARTING AT 6 PM
Feed The Mind
“Knowledge Nurtures Hope”
Leaders of PromiseScholarship Program!
Over thirty $1000 scholarships

Living eight years in the United Statesand learning the value of the opportu-nities that were offered to me, inspiredme to begin a non-profit organization. Iam proud to share with you that Iregistered “Feed-the-Mind” in UnionCounty to help underprivileged chil-dren receive an education. But none of this could have beenpossible without the undying support of the members of Phi Theta Kappa. While stressed and overwhelmed bymany obstacles that came my way, PhiTheta Kappa became my source of strength and most reliable support.I want to take this opportunity to thankyou all for adopting “Feed-the-Mind” asa service project for the chapter, andfor helping me accomplish this project Iam passionate about. With the aid of Joseph Eulo, SheilaCasey, and Diana Gonzalez I will beputting together a documentary toshare with you. In it there will be foot-age of my trip to Colombia in which“Feed-the-Mind” sponsored a schoolfor an entire year. You will see the impact of your kind-ness and generosity and the smilesyou helped to place on the faces of thirty-two children in Colombia. Thankyou for your help in providing hope tothese children
.
