Things change in different ways. Although something may be increasing, it has a few different ways of increasing.

Increasing , but faster and faster

Increasing at a constant rate

Increasing, but slower and slower

Decreasing, but faster and faster

Decreasing at a constant rate

Decreasing, but slower and slower

Theres one more thing that could happen too Can you figure it out?

Now lets draw some pictures and take some data of things changing. You have a circle and the radius is growing at a rate of 1 cm/second. It starts out as a degenerate circle (also known as a point). Draw how the circle looks for the first 5 seconds. Look, Ive already drawn the degenerate circle for you!

The circle is clearly getting larger. Thus both the area and circumference are getting larger too. Calculate the Radius, Area and the Circumference at various times (approximate to the tenth):
Time Radius (in cm) Area (in cm2 rounded to the hundredth) Circumference (in cm)

t 0

t 1
t 2 t 3

t 4 t 5

The radius is growing at a constant rate (1 cm/second). What do you conjecture: is the area growing at a constant rate? What about the circumference? How do you know? Area:

Circumference:

Now graph some things for me!

In the blanks below the graphs, write what the graph illustrates Increasing, but faster and faster Increasing at a constant rate Increasing, but slower and slower

The radius is: _________________________________

The Area is: __________________________________

The Circumference is: __________________________

Lets do the same thing again, with a slight variation You have a circle and the area is growing at a rate of 10 cm2/second. It starts out as a degenerate circle (also known as a point).
Time Radius (in cm) Area (in cm2 rounded to the hundredth) Circumference (in cm)

t 0
t 1 t 2

t 3 t 4 t 5

Draw how the circle looks for the first 5 seconds. Try to be as accurate as possible when drawing the radii. Look, Ive already drawn the degenerate circle for you!

The area is growing at a constant rate (10 cm2/second). What do you conjecture: is the radius growing at a constant rate? What about the circumference? How do you know? Radius: Circumference:

In the blanks below the graphs, write what the graph illustrates Increasing, but faster and faster Increasing at a constant rate Increasing, but slower and slower

The Area is: __________________________________

The Radius is: ________________________________

The Circumference is: __________________________

The big takeaway is that many things may be dependent on one thing changing However: __________________________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________________.
